Burns, Quow in World Indoors team

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 24.02.2012

Olympic Games sprint relay silver medallist Marc Burns is among seven athletes selected to wear Trinidad and Tobago colours at the March 9-11 World Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Istanbul, Turkey.

Burns will compete in the men's 60 metres dash. His fastest time this season is 6.64 seconds, a clocking he produced in finishing fifth at the Auburn Invitational, in Alabama, USA, last month.

Three quarter-milers--Lalonde Gordon, Jarrin Solomon and Renny Quow--have been entered in the men's 400m. Just two, however, will be allowed to compete in the event in Istanbul.

Gordon is the fastest of the three this season at 46.43 seconds. That clocking, produced on January 21, had earned him the top spot on the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) 2012 performance list.

Gordon is currently 19th on the IAAF list. Solomon is 24th at 46.55 seconds, while Quow is 32nd, the 2009 World Outdoor Championship 400m bronze medallist getting home in 46.70 in his lone 400m outing this season.

Gordon, Solomon, Quow and 18-year-old Jereem Richards have been named for the World Indoor Championship men's 4x400m relay.

Jamaal James will do battle in the men's 800m, and is also the mile relay reserve. Two Saturdays ago, James clocked an indoor best of one minute, 47.66 seconds in finishing third in the Valentine Invitational 800m event, in Boston, USA.

Aleesha Barber is the lone female athlete on the T&T World Indoors team. She will be on show in the women's 60m hurdles. Her best run this season is 8.17 seconds.

The T&T team will leave for Istanbul on March 6.
