Jonathan Ramnanansingh :: Newsday :: 03.06.2012

Unattached sprinter, Machel Cedenio secured himself a spot at this year’s World Junior Championships and the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) after copping gold in the Boys Under-18 400m event in a blistering 46.68s, on day one of the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) Junior Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday.

Cedenio made no mistake and powered to victory over eventual runner-up Petrotrin’s Theon Lewis (48.53) while Abildene Wildcats’ Asa Guevara claimed third in 48.55. The unattached sprinter’s finish saw him better the required World Junior standard time of 47.30 and crush the CAC qualifying time of 49 seconds flat.

In the girls equivalent, Jeminise Parris of Memphis Pioneers was first to cross the finish line in 56.52. Taking the silver medal spot was Abildene Wildcats’ Kadisha Francois in 58.16 while Point Fortin New Jets athlete, Shirnell Ettienne claimed third in 58.21.

Meanwhile, Concorde’s Jonathan Holder powered to gold in the hotly contested Boys Under-20 100m event. This final event on the first day of competition was billed to be a scorcher, and indeed it was. Claiming bronze was Petrotrin Point-a-Pierre’s Ayodele Taffe, who finished on the heels of Sobers in 10.71s. Rounding off the top five were Simplex’s Jesse Berkley (10.79) and Quantum’s Machel Mark (10.99) respectively.

Concorde athlete, Lisa Wickham followed in her club-mate’s footsteps and recorded a wind-assisted golden finish in the girls equivalent. Memphis Pioneers sprinter, Peli Alzola finished as runner-up in 12.07 while Simplex runner Chelsea Charles took third in 12.21. Meanwhile, Zenith’s Nicholas Douglas copped gold in the Boys Under-18 100m event. He emerged victorious over eventual runner-up Simplex’s Declan McLean (11.06) and third-placed Zenith’s Ron Wright (11.13).

In the girls equivalent, Point Fortin New Jets athlete Aaliyah Telesford won gold in 11.70. Receiving silver was Zenith’s Zakiyah De Noon in 11.95 and claiming bronze was Petrotrin (PAP) athlete Kayelle Clarke in 12.01. Today’s track and field events will see the climax of this year’s Junior Championships with the Boys Under-20 javelin throw featuring Olympic-hopeful Keshorn Walcott.
