Mile relay record at National Champs

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 25.06.2012

Renny Quow, Lalonde Gordon, Jarrin Solomon and Deon Lendore combined to break a 20-year-old Trinidad and Tobago record, on day two of the NAAA Sagicor/NGC National Open Track and Field Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, late yesterday.

The T&T quartet stopped the clock at three minutes, 00.45 seconds to erase the 3:01.05 men's 4x400 metres standard, established by Patrick Delice, Alvin Daniel, Neil De Silva and Ian Morris way back in 1992.

The 3:00.45 clocking earned T&T a huge victory in the men's mile relay, the final event at the Championships. Venezuela finished a distant second in 3:04.05.

The T&T junior team—Asa Guevara, Brandon Benjamin, Theon Lewis and Machel Cedenio—also impressed, picking up bronze in 3:05.95.

Rondel Sorrillo dominated his rivals in the men's 200m final, holding on to his title with a 20.48 seconds run.

Emmanuel Callender led coming off the turn, but Sorrillo was superb on the straight, surging past the leader and romping to victory. Gordon, the new 400m champion, was also strong on the straight, moving past Callender to claim silver in 20.77. Callender was forced to settle for bronze in 20.90.

After the race, Sorrillo told the Express he expects to run a lot faster at the London Olympics.

"My hope is to be top four. I know I have a lot more in me. It's just to put it out at the right time and run a technically correct race."

Kai Selvon retained her women's 200m title. The 20-year-old sprinter just got the better of Semoy Hackett in a battle royale in front of an appreciative main stand crowd.

Running into a 1.9 metres per second headwind on the straight, Selvon and Hackett tried desperately to gain an advantage on the other. Selvon eventually earned the edge, outleaning Hackett for victory in 22.96 seconds. Hackett clocked 22.98 to seize silver, while bronze went to Reyare Thomas (23.36).

Janeil Bellille beat Josanne Lucas in a thriller to complete a hat-trick of victories in the women's 400m hurdles.

Bellille was in front coming off the final turn. Lucas battled tenaciously on the home straight, but a gutsy Bellille held her off for the win, getting to the line in a Championship record 56.31 seconds. Lucas clocked 56.39 to earn silver, ahead of Barbadian La Toya Griffith (57.27).

In the absence of injured Jehue Gordon, Emanuel Mayers won the men's 400m hurdles in 50.66 seconds.

Melissa De Leon returned a time of two minutes, 07.35 seconds to top the women's 800m field.

Grenadian Neisha Bernard-Thomas led for most of the race, serving as a rabbit in a bid to help De Leon achieve the 2:01.30 Olympic "B" standard. Bernard-Thomas dropped out less than 100 metres from home, clearing the way for a De Leon victory. The T&T half-miler, however, couldn't get close to the Olympic qualifying time.

The men's 800m final was won by Bermuda's Aaron Evans in 1:46.69. T&T's Jamaal James got home in 1:47.25 to cop second spot. And Mark London claimed bronze in 1:50.54, the Carifta Games boys' under-20 champion beating the 1:51.00 World Junior Championship standard.
