Romany: Phillip, Jehue have real medal shot

Kern De Freitas :: Trinidad Express :: 22.06.2012

A "real, real chance" at precious Olympic metal.

That's the belief Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) president Larry Romany has in quarter-mile hurdler Jehue Gordon, cyclist Njisane Phillip and sailor Andrew Lewis.

During yesterday's press conference at TSTT House in Port of Spain, to announce the communications provider's support for T&T's Olympic team as official wireless provider, Romany said he expected the trio to medal at the Brazil 2016 Games.

He insisted, though, that based on their performances, potential and dedication to their respective disciplines, the athletes, each at their first Olympic Games, could challenge for a spot on the podium at London 2012.

The trio are also being sponsored by the Blink Broadband brand beyond the 2012 Games and Romany urged the sponsors to continue to support the athletes, who he said need corporate support to compete successfully at the global level.

The TTOC head also hailed the Committee's "partnership" with the communications providers and hailed this period as a "new era in sponsorship and partnership" for elite athletes and the TTOC.

"It is not easy for an athlete who lives the Olympic Dream every day for four years to compete at the Olympic Games when the time comes without the assistance of the corporate sector," Romany said.

TSTT executive vice-president for enterprise services, Jay Alvi, heaped praises on the three athletes for their dedication to national sport.

He said for T&T athletes to be successful at the Games, they need corporate support and invited other sponsors to join and assist.

"For our athletes to excel on the international stage they need to eat, breathe and carry their chosen field with them 24/7," Alvi stated.

He explained that TSTT will make a number of contributions, including providing voice, data and Blackberry messenger services for T&T's athletes at the Games.

TSTT will also provide communications for this weekend's National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) National Track and Field Championships.

The company will also partner with CCN TV6, which will provide coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Next month, they will also host a Community Olympic Clash promotion on successive Sundays before the Games, when teams from three communities in T&T will compete in a series of challenge events.

The first will be held on July 8 at Irwin Park in Siparia, while the other two will take place on July 15 at Barrackpore Recreation Ground and July 22 at Mason Hall.
