Gordon tops Memphis awards

WORLD 400m hurdles champion Jehue Gordon walked away with the Top Male athlete award at the annual Memphis Athletic Club Awards Ceremony and Dinner at the International School, West Moorings on Saturday night.

Gordon predictably secured the award after his golden run in the men’s 400m hurdles finals at the IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field World Championships in Moscow, Russia in August. The Maraval resident won the gold in a national record and world leading time of 47.69 and was presented with a special painting of him dipping across the line to take the gold. The painting was done by artist Sunid Arthur.

Making the presentation were Gordon’s coaches Dr Ian Hypolite and Edwin Skinner. Gordon finished ahead of World Championship team- members Jarrin Solomon, Emmanuel Callendar and Jamol James who received honourable mention awards.

Dawnell Collymore collected her third straight Female Athlete title edging World Championships competitors Aleena Brooks and Shawna Fermin. Brooks and Fermin were members of TT’s women’s 4x400m which struck gold at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Mexico running a national record.

The women’s 4x400m team debuted at the World Championships in Moscow. Peli Alzola, Zara Suite-Stewart, Jenae Alexander and Astrid Cassimire received honourable mention.

Suite-Stewart and Cassimire were specially honoured for their success in academics. Suite-Stewart won a National Open Scholarship and is studying in England while Cassimire was the top student in Mathematics and Additional Mathematics in 2012.

Carifta champion Jeminise Parris took the girls under 18 prize after winning the girls under 17 300m hurdles Carifta title in the Bahamas in April.

Parris was also third in the 100m hurdles and reached the semi-finals in the event at the World Youth Track and Field Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine in July. Double Carifta bronze medallist Reubin Walters took home the Boys under 20 crown after this third place finish at the 110m and 400m hurdles events in the Bahamas.

Kadeem Campbell secured the Boys under 18 award with Clement Campbell and Shania Mc Carter taking the Boys and Girls under 15 trophies. The top under 13 athletes were Jeneil Morris (girls) and Shaquon Baptiste (boys) with Bilqis Abdal Karim and Jamali Lynch topping the Girls and Boys under 11 category respectively.
