Newsday :: 19.01.2014

World and Olympic semi-finalist Michelle-Lee Ahye got her 2014 season off to an impressive start, speeding to victory in the women’s 60m at the Houston Indoor Opener in Houston, Texas on January 11.

Ahye was first to the line in 7.23 seconds finishing ahead of American Tawana Meadows (7.29) and Jamaica’s Patricia Hall (7.49). Ahye’s time was 0.01 second slower than her semi-final clocking of 7.22, a new personal best for the 22-year-old.

The time is also the fastest in the world, 0.06 seconds quicker than Olympic gold medallist Tianna (Madison) Bartoletta of the USA (7.28) set on the same day. Ahye is the 2011 Pan American Junior 100m champion and is a four time Carifta gold medallist.

The former Tranquility Government Secondary Student reached the semi-finals of the women’s 100m at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea as a 19-year-old and repeated the feat one year later at the London Olympics and then at last year’s World Championships, in Moscow, Russia.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Stewart also recorded a victory in the men’s weight throw at the Father Diamond Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia.

The Morgan State University student captured the event with a toss of 18.09. The 2008 Carifta boys under 20 discus champion was also third at the University at Albany Great Dane Classic in New York on January 17 with distance of 18.92.

Kervin Morgan (LIU Brooklyn) was 41st in the men’s 200m. The 2005 World Youth silver medallist finished fourth in heat seven in 22.76. Morgan was also 23rd in the 60m preliminaries (7.09) at the NYC Gotham Cup in New York on January 10.
