Newsday :: 21.01.2014

DEANDRA Daniel broke the Coppin State University women’s high jump record when she lept to 1.80m at the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Maryland on Saturday.

Daniel cleared the new mark on her third attempt to take third place in the competition and improve on the previous record of 1.78m she set in winning at the Father Diamond Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia on January 11.

The Terrapin Invitational was a success for the Dover Athletic Club athlete as she sat new personal best marks in long jump (5.56m) and the triple jump (10.63m). Daniel shared the previous high jump record of 1.75 with another TT athlete Natoya Baird, who now coaches Daniel at Coppin State.

Meanwhile, fellow TT/Coppin State athlete Haysean Cowie-Clarke recorded his first victory for his school taking the men’s 60m at the UMES Collegiate Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland on January 4.

Cowie-Clarke was first to the line in 6.97. In the 200m the former Scarborough Secondary/Bishops High student was sixth (22.30).

In his first meet for the season in December, Cowie-Clarke was third in the men’s 60m at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland in 6.93 and set a personal best in the 200m clocking 22.59 to finish seventh.

Olympic bronze medallist Deon Lendore led Texas A&M to another men’s 4x400m title at the Texas A&M 10 Team Invitational in College Station, Texas on Saturday.

Lendore and his team-mates combined to clock 3:05.68. The anchor leg on T&T’s 2012 Olympic men’s 4x400m bronze medal winning team helped Texas A&M to victory in the Reveille Invitational in December in 3:07.14.

Fellow T&T/Texas A&M athlete Janiel Bellille led the way in the women’s 400m in 54.48. The 2008 World Junior 400m hurdles silver medallist clocked 54.48 seconds and returned to push Texas A&M to victory in the women’s 4x400m (3:37.16).

Reyare Thomas (Abilene Christian)missed out a medal in the women’s 200m finishing third in 23.91. Baylor’s Danielle Davis was sixth in the women’s 60m hurdles finals in 8.85, 0.03 seconds slower than her semifinals clocking.
