John strikes gold in North Dakota

Deborah John struck gold in the women’s 60 metres hurdles, at the Thundering Herd Classic in North Dakota, USA, on the weekend.

The Trinidad and Tobago athlete stopped the clock at 8.46 seconds in the final. She had clocked 8.44 in the preliminary round.

John also competed in the 60m dash, qualifying second fastest with a 7.77 seconds run in the preliminaries. However, she did not face the starter in the finals.

At the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup meet, in Pennsylvania, Steve Waithe grabbed men’s triple jump gold with a 15.54 metres effort. And in the long jump, the Penn State University student seized silver with a 7.07m leap.

ASA College athlete Odou Hazel returned a time of one minute, 02.97 seconds to secure silver in the college men’s 500m, at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, in New York.

Coppin State University’s Deandra Daniel was fifth in the women’s high jump with a 1.71m clearance.

Annie Alexander threw the iron ball 15.18m to finish ninth in the championship women’s shot put event. Morgan State University student Emmanuel Stewart secured 16th spot in the championship men’s weight throw with a 17.80m effort.

Coppin State sprinter Haysean Cowie-Clarke was 22nd overall in the college men’s 200m in 22.49 seconds, and 29th in the championship men’s 60m in 6.94. And in the college women’s 400m, University of Delaware student Chelsi Campbell clocked 26.05 seconds to finish 42nd.

At the XL Galan meet, in Stockholm, Sweden, last Thursday, Mikel Thomas picked up silver in the men’s 60m hurdles B race in 7.86 seconds.

In Nebraska, USA, on the weekend, Iowa Central Community College student Jessica James clocked 1:32.31 to earn silver in the women’s 600m, at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.

At the Meyo Invitational, in Indiana, Durell Busby bagged bronze in the men’s 60m hurdles. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee athlete got to the line in 8.01 seconds.

And Louisiana State University (LSU) sprinter Shermund Allsop was sixth in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational men’s 200m event in 21.28 seconds. As reported in the Sunday Express, another T&T athlete, Texas A&M University student Deon Lendore won the event in 20.68, the clocking giving him a share of the 2014 world indoor lead.
