Ahye equals T&T 60 metres record

…strikes gold at Millrose Games

Michelle-Lee Ahye equalled the Trinidad and Tobago record in the women’s 60 metres dash when she clocked a fast 7.13 seconds to strike gold at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York, USA, yesterday (Saturday).

The 21-year-old sprinter joined Kelly-Ann Baptiste in the T&T record book, Ahye’s 7.13 run matching the time produced by Baptiste in Arkansas, USA in 2008.

Ahye is fourth on the 2014 world indoor performance list, behind Ivory Coast sprinter Murielle Ahoure, the world leader at 7.03, Briton Asha Philip (7.09) and Jamaica’s two-time Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (7.10).

In yesterday’s race, Ahye finished just ahead of Tori Bowie, the American earning silver in 7.14 seconds. Nigeria’s Gloria Asumnu clocked 7.25 to finish a distant third.

Another T&T sprinter, Geronne Black was seventh in 7.30 seconds.

There was another Millrose Games victory for T&T in the men’s 300m. Lalonde Gordon topped the field in 32.47 seconds—a new indoor best for the double Olympic bronze medallist.

Gordon, the 2014 indoor 400m world leader at 45.17 seconds, was among three T&T athletes finishing in the top four.

Renny Quow, who bagged 400m bronze for the country at the 2009 World Championships, finished third in the Millrose Games 300m in 32.71 seconds, while fourth spot went to 2012 Olympic 4x400m bronze medallist Jarrin Solomon in 33.21.

Manteo Mitchell was second to Gordon yesterday, the American clocking 32.59 seconds.

And T&T sprinter Keston Bledman faced the starter in the Millrose Games men’s 60m dash, but was disqualified for a false start. The race was won by American Marvin Bracy in 6.50 seconds.
