Stewart betters T&T weight throw best

Emmanuel Stewart smashed his own Trinidad and Tobago record in the men’s weight throw when he produced a big 19.63 metres effort at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Maryland, USA, on the weekend.

The Morgan State University student struck gold in the event.

Stewart’s winning throw was 70 centimetres better than his old T&T standard—18.93m. The 19.63m effort was also a new MEAC record.

Four of Stewart’s throws bettered the 19-metre mark—19.32m, 19.49m, 19.49m, and 19.63m. He fouled his two other throws.

Stewart also competed in the shot put, the T&T thrower finishing fourth with a 15.91m heave.

Another T&T athlete, Coppin State University’s Deandra Daniel cleared the bar at 1.77m to grab gold in the women’s high jump. Morgan State’s Jeanelle Ovid (1.67m) finished fourth.

And Coppin State sprinter Haysean Cowie-Clarke was fourth in the men’s 60m final in 6.90 seconds.

At the Lafayette Rider Winter Games, in New York, Jarrin Solomon topped the men’s invitational 400m field in 46.71 seconds.

Chris Hercules seized silver in the men’s triple jump with a 15.04m effort.

Andre Marcano bagged men’s 60m bronze in 6.85 seconds.

Temple University’s Kiersten LaRoche earned bronze in the college women’s long jump with a 5.58m leap. And in the 60m hurdles, LaRoche was 12th overall in 9.43 seconds.

Reyare Thomas emerged victorious in the women’s 200m, at the Husky Classic, in Washington. The Abilene Christian University (ACU) sprinter got to the line in 24.02 seconds. Thomas clocked 7.49 in the 60m preliminaries. In the final, however, she was disqualified for a false start.

At the Texas A&M Invitational, Texas A&M University student Carlyle Roudette clocked a personal best 46.42 seconds to win the men’s 400m.

Another T&T/Texas A&M athlete, Wayne Davis II finished second in the men’s 60m hurdles in 7.70.

And Janeil Bellille, also a student at Texas A&M, secured seventh spot in the women’s 200m in a personal best 23.87 seconds.

There was a new PR (personal record) for Steve Waithe, at the SPIRE Division I Indoor Invite, in Ohio. The Pennsylvania State University student triumphed in the men’s triple jump with a 16.00m effort.

Durell Busby picked up silver in the men’s 60m hurdles, at the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Big Meet, in Michigan. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student clocked 7.98 seconds. He also competed in the 200m, finishing 16th overall in 22.46.

At the Iowa State Classic, Alena Brooks produced her fastest ever half-mile clocking--indoors or outdoors. The University of Minnesota student clocked 2:04.90 for fifth spot in the women’s 800m. But though the time is faster than Melissa De Leon’s 2:05.22 national indoor record, Brooks will not replace De Leon in the T&T record book since the Iowa State Classic race was run on an over-sized track.

The Lied Recreation Center track, in Iowa, is 300 metres, while the distance recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for record purposes is 200 metres.

In New York, T&T sprinter Keston Bledman faced the starter in the Millrose Games men’s 60m dash, but was disqualified for a false start. The race was won by American Marvin Bracy in a fast 6.50 seconds.
