Jehue Gordon tipped for First Citizens award

...Borel slight favourite among women

Track and Field athletes, hurdler Jehue Gordon and shot putter Cleopatra Borel are favourites to walk away with the top awards when the First Citizens Sports Foundation, under the distinguished patronage of President Anthony Carmona will host its annual First Citizens Sports Foundation Sports Awards on March 14 at the Queen’s Hall, Cascade, St Ann’s.

The duo have already clinched the “Senior Male and Female Athletes of the Year” respectively of the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) awards.

Gordon of Memphis Pioneers also emerged “Male Athlete of the Year” at the Spirit of Sports Awards (SOSA) produced by the Ministry of Sport and the Sport Company of T&T (SporTT) followed by the “Sportsman of the Year” at the T&T Olympic Committee’s (TTOC) awards.

Gordon’s accolades were for his golden win at the IAAF World Championships held in Moscow, Russia, back in August in a time of 47.69. When he set foot on the track at the Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium, last September, victory was again his.

Borel’s performance at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games earned her the NAAA nod.

Other major nominees among the men are swimmer George Bovell, Soca Warriors captain Kenwyne Jones, cyclist Njisane Phillip, table tennis veteran Dexter St Louis, and volleyballer Daneil Williams.

Among the women, Borel is a slight favourite ahead of table-tennis ace Rheann Chung, volleyballer Sinead Jack, hockey player Alanna Lewis and cricketer, Stacy Ann King. Overall, 55 athletes will be up for the top awards, 22 women and 30 men.

The Foundation’s selection committee, headed by Chairman Dr Keith Clifford and aided by sporting associations (through the nominations of athletes), has worked through an exhaustive and thorough process in deciding on the various nominations.

In addition to the top honours, awards will also be handed out on the night for the Jeffrey Stollmeyer award for the best sporting administration and the Lystra Lewis award for the “Team of the Year”

The “WOW” moments which was first introduced in 2009 will again be among the highlights. These moments have been chosen by the media as the top performances of the year.
