Thompson edges Bledman in LSU 60

Richard “Torpedo” Thompson led a one-two finish for Trinidad and Tobago at the LSU Twilight Indoor track and field meet, in Louisiana, USA, on Friday.

Thompson stopped the clock at 6.66 seconds to strike gold in the men’s 60 metres dash, getting to the line just ahead of another T&T sprint star, Keston Bledman, the runner-up in 6.67. T&T/Louisiana State University (LSU) athlete Shermund Allsop clocked a personal best 6.78 to secure fourth spot.

In another men’s 60m event, T&T’s Kyron Blaise finished fifth in 6.95 seconds.

And in the men’s long jump, Blaise seized silver with a 7.65 metres leap.

At the Virginia Tech Challenge, Ayanna Alexander grabbed gold in the women’s triple jump, the T&T athlete producing a 13.20m effort.

There was double gold for Carissa Leacock at the Iowa Invite.

Leacock topped the women’s long jump field, disturbing the sand at 6.03m—a new indoor best for the University of Iowa senior. And in the triple jump, Leacock won with an 11.92m effort.

At the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VI Indoor Championships, in Kansas, Butler Community College student Abiane Collymore earned silver in the women’s 1,000m in three minutes, 14.72 seconds.

Another T&T/Butler athlete, Richard Marcano finished 16th overall in the men’s 60m with a 7.09 seconds clocking. And in the 200m, he was 20th in 23.07.

Two Saturdays ago, Collymore competed at another meet in Kansas, the Highland Challenge. The Butler runner finished second in the women’s 1,000m in 3:13.15.
