NAAA sends condolences to family of fallen runner

The National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) issued a press release, yesterday, in which it expressed condolences to the family of Cavahn McKenzie, the Jamaican runner who collapsed and died after completing the junior men’s six-kilometre event at the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships, at the Mt Irvine Bay Golf Course in Tobago, on Saturday.

Here is the full release:

“It is with deepest regrets, that the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) has to announce that yesterday (Saturday) evening at around 3.35. p.m. Cavahn McKenzie a seventeen-year-old Jamaican athlete collapsed while running the course at the ninth edition of the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships. The young athlete was later pronounced dead.

“There were adequate emergency teams at the event that responded immediately, and the athlete was rushed to the Scarborough General Hospital. The Tobago House of Assembly has been lending their full support in the matter.

“At this point in time the NAAA’s is not in a position to give out any other further information concerning the situation. An autopsy will be performed on Monday, February 24, 2014 (today) with a member of the Jamaican management team present. As soon as a full medical report is received from the medical examiner, all details will be released.

“The NAAA’s will like to extend their condolences to the athletes’ family, and the entire Jamaican contingent.”

Two other Jamaicans--Shawn Pitter and Shevan Parks--were hospitalised. However, they were released on Saturday night, and returned to Jamaica yesterday.
