Alleyne-Forte warms up with 400 win

ArticlTrinidad and Tobago quarter-miler Ade Alleyne-Forte warmed up for the March 7-9 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland with victory at the Virginia Tech Challenge indoor meet in Virginia, USA, on Saturday.

Alleyne-Forte clocked 48.31 seconds to secure top spot in the men’s 400 metres, beating American Christopher Tate (48.39) into second.

Alleyne-Forte trailed Tate at the end of the first lap. The T&T athlete produced a 22.84 seconds 200-metre split, while the American’s split was 22.75. Alleyne-Forte, however, was the stronger of the two athletes in the second half of the race, his 25.47 seconds effort taking him home ahead of Tate (25.64).

Alleyne-Forte has been selected as part of a five-member T&T men’s 4x400m squad for the World Indoors meet. The other four athletes on the mile relay squad are Lalonde Gordon, Jereem Richards, Jarrin Solomon and Emanuel Mayers.

Gordon, the 2014 indoor 400m world leader at 45.17 seconds, will compete in that event in Sopot. Either Richards or Solomon will also face the starter in the individual 400.

Also doing battle for T&T in Sopot will be Michelle-Lee Ahye and Geronne Black in the women’s 60m dash.

Jessica James grabbed women’s 600m gold for Iowa Central Community College at the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Region XI Indoor Championships, in Iowa, USA, on the weekend. The T&T athlete returned a time of one minute, 35.11 seconds.

At the Panther TuneUp indoor meet, in Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Durell Busby topped the men’s 60m field in 6.95 seconds.

In New Jersey, Chelsi Campbell finished second in the Princeton Indoor Invite women’s 500m event. The University of Delaware student clocked 1:17.47.

And two Saturdays ago, Shawna Fermin got home in 54.36 seconds to strike gold in the women’s 400m at the Pomona-Pitzer All Comers outdoor meet, in California.eText
