McKenzie’s body for Jamaica by Friday

The body of teenaged Jamaican runner Cavahn McKenzie who died of a heart attack Saturday following the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Championship, in Mt Irvine, Tobago, is expected to be flown back to his country by Friday. Caribbean Airlines has agreed to transport the body from Trinidad to Jamaica, following the conclusion of further blood tests and logistics. McKenzie collapsed following his participation in the junior men’s 6k event and was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed at the Forensic Sciences Centre, St Clair, where it was confirmed that the 18-year-old died of a heart attack. According to public relations officer of the National Association of Athletics Administrations Peter Samuel, due to the nature of the event, sanctioned by the NACAC, neither he nor the local governing body has been privy to certain information.

“This is an issue for the Jamaican High Commission and the NACAC,” said Samuel.

“We (NAAA) would only receive further information (regarding his departure) from them (Jamaican High Commission). What I can say is that he (McKenzie) died of a massive heart attack.”

McKenzie concluded the run in just over 20 minutes, placing 21st. He was a student of St Jago High in Jamaica.
