Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 06.03.2014

Lalonde Gordon opens his bid for honours at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland early tomorrow morning (TT time).

The Trinidad and Tobago athlete is the man to beat in Sopot. He is second on the 2014 world indoor performance list, thanks to the 45.17 seconds run he produced to earn top spot at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, in Boston, USA, on February 8.

Another T&T athlete, Deon Lendore leads the world with his national record run of 45.03 seconds. But the Texas A&M University student is preparing for the March 14-15 NCAA Indoor Championships in New Mexico, USA, and is not in Sopot.

Gordon is well ahead of his World Indoor Championship rivals on the 2014 performance list. The next fastest is American champion Kyle Clemons, who is fifth on the list at 45.60 seconds.

T&T will also be represented in the men’s 400m by Jarrin Solomon, whose best time this season is 46.70.

The field is also expected to include American David Verburg (45.62), Pavel Maslak (45.66) of the Czech Republic, Briton Nigel Levine (45.71), Dominican Republic’s Luguelin Santos (45.89), veteran Bahamian Chris Brown (45.93), and Costa Rica’s reigning world indoor champion Nery Brenes (46.53).

The opening men’s 400m preliminary round heat is scheduled for 5.40 tomorrow morning (TT time). The semi-final round is scheduled for 4.15 p.m.

T&T will also be represented in Sopot in the women’s 60m dash. The opening round takes place on Saturday.

Of the 44 women on the entry list, Michelle-Lee Ahye is the eighth fastest this year at 7.13 seconds. The clocking earned Ahye gold at the February 15 Millrose Games in New York, USA and a share of the T&T record, with Kelly-Ann Baptiste.

Another T&T sprinter, Geronne Black is also listed for action in the World Indoor Championship women’s 60m event.
