James strikes gold at NJCAA Champs

Trinidad and Tobago’s Jessica James captured the women’s 600 metres title at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships in New York, USA, yesterday. The Iowa Central Community College student returned a time of one minute, 32.13 seconds.

James also earned gold in the 4x800m event. She ran the third leg for Iowa Central, helping her team to victory in 9:33.31. Another T&T athlete, Abiane Collymore anchored the Butler County team to a seventh-place finish in 10:01.32.

Collymore was eighth in the women’s 1,000m final in 3:11.46. In the preliminaries, she had clocked 3:06.44.

In the women’s 400m, Western Texas College students, Marissa Gale (58.10) and Kernesha Spann (58.24) were 11th and 13th, respectively.

Spann anchored Western Texas to 4x400m silver in 3:46.70.

Iowa Central, Western Texas and Butler were first, seventh and 24th, respectively, in the women’s team competition. Iowa Central were also first among the men.

At the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships, in Boston, Temple University’s Kiersten LaRoche accumulated 3,536 points to bag bronze in the women’s pentathlon.

Coppin State University’s Deandra Daniel cleared the bar at 1.75 metres to earn women’s high jump bronze.

South Plains College students, Shun-Shauna Mason and Elton Walcott earned silver at the Tarleton State Invitational outdoor meet, in Texas, on Thursday.

Mason finished second in the women’s 100m dash in 11.90 seconds, while Walcott was the runner-up in the men’s triple jump with a 15.34m effort. And in the women’s 800m, another T&T/South Plains athlete, Domonique Williams picked up bronze in 2:17.35.
