Queen’s Baton arrives in T&T

The Queen’s Baton, which began its journey on October 9 at Buckingham Palace, England, arrived in Trinidad yesterday afternoon. The baton will travel approximately 190,000 km around the world, including Asia, Oceania and Africa for 288 days before it goes to Glasgow, Scotland for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on July 23. At a press conference held at the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) House on Abercromby Street yesterday, president of the TTOC Brian Lewis was happy to have the baton in Trinidad.

Lewis said: “On behalf of the T&T Commonwealth Games association, we are delighted to welcome the Queen’s Baton here to Trinidad and Tobago. It will be alot of exciting activities. We believe in the value of the commonwealth games.” British High Commissioner to T&T Arthur Snell, is hoping that many people will follow the baton’s visit in T&T. Snell stated: “Please follow the baton as it travels around the country, as it will involve alot of athletes and children. I hope many people will be able to follow the baton’s visit on it’s time in T&T.”

Secretary of the TTOC Annette Knott, will be in charge of the Tobago leg of the visit: “The baton arrives in tobago at 8am tomorrow (today), and there will be a number of changes on route, with alot of schools involved along the way. The baton will travel through areas such as Bon Accord, Signal Hill and Pigeon Point.” The Queen’s Baton will return to Trinidad today at approximately 6 pm.
