Lendore bids for NCAA honours

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 13.03.2014

Deon Lendore is among five Trinidad and Tobago athletes who will bid for individual honours at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

Lendore will face the starter in the men’s 400 metres preliminaries tonight (TT time). The Texas A&M University student is expected to successfully negotiate his qualifying heat and earn a berth in tomorrow’s eight-man finals.

Lendore is the 2014 world indoor leader with the 45.03 seconds national record run he produced in striking gold at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships in Texas on March 1.

Last year, Lendore was tipped for gold at the NCAA Indoor Championships, but was hampered by a calf injury and finished sixth in 46.10 seconds.

Another T&T/Texas A&M athlete, Wayne Davis II will bid to turn silver into gold in the men’s 60m hurdles. In 2013, Davis finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championship final in a national record time of 7.59 seconds.

Davis will compete in the preliminary round tonight (TT time), and if all goes to plan, in the final tomorrow.

Texas A&M’s Janeil Bellille and University of Minnesota student Alena Brooks will also be in action tonight. Bellille faces the starter in the qualifying round of the women’s 400m, while Brooks competes in the women’s 800m preliminaries.

And Penn State University’s Steve Waithe will do battle in tomorrow’s men’s triple jump event.

Lendore and another T&T athlete, Carlyle Roudette are expected to wear Texas A&M colours in the men’s 4x400m relay, while Bellille is likely to be part of the Texas A&M quartet that will run in the women’s 4x4.
