Lendore fastest in NCAA heats

Trinidad and Tobago’s Deon Lendore was the fastest man on show in the 400 metres event on the opening day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Indoor Track and Field Championships, in New Mexico, USA, on Friday.

The Texas A&M University student clocked 45.60 seconds to finish first in heat four and first overall in the men’s 400m preliminaries.

Alena Brooks was also impressive on Friday. The University of Minnesota senior returned a time of two minutes, 06.25 seconds to secure second spot in the second of two women’s 800m heats. Her clocking was the second fastest overall.

Wayne Davis II finished second in heat two and third overall in the men’s 60m hurdles preliminaries in 7.62 seconds. The Texas A&M student earned silver in the event at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Another T&T/Texas A&M athlete, Janeil Bellille fell just short in her bid for a spot in the women’s 400m finals. Her 52.74 seconds clocking was good enough for third in heat two and ninth overall, but only the top eight advanced, Bellille missing out by five-hundredths of a second.

After press time, last night, Lendore, Brooks and Davis competed in their respective finals, while another T&T athlete, Steve Waithe was among the competitors in the men’s triple jump. Lendore and fellow-T&T quarter-miler Carlyle Roudette were expected to be in the Texas A&M line-up in the men’s 4x400m relay. And Bellille was listed to compete for Texas A&M in the women’s 4x4.
