NGC is pumping $2.33 million into the National Athletics Administrators Association (NAAA) to assist the organisation with its development programmes for coaches, volunteers and young athletes.

The funds are part of a one-year deal that will also assist with governance issues including the updating of the NAAA’s constitution.

At the media launch of the partnership deal entitled “On Track to Greater Success” yesterday at centre field of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, NAAA president Ephraim Serrette said the funds will help the organisation to meet the shortfall of funding from its budget.

“Track and field is not as popular as cricket or even football but it continues to deliver on the international stage for this country. This partnership will go a long way to the NAAA’s meeting a lot of its stated goals where development is concerned,” Serrette said

“The funds will go towards programmes geared to development, coach, volunteer, official and club development so that we (NAAA) can continued to produce internationally, continue to have athletes making the transition from juvenile through to junior and all the way to senior and elite athletes,” Serrette said.

Serrette also said funds will go to updating the NAAA’s constitution to deal with its growing membership and participation.

The president also said NGC will now become the title sponsor of the National Juvenile Track and Field Championships, the National Junior Track and Field Championships and be co-sponsor with Sagicor of the National Open Track and Field Championships.

Vice-president, human and corporate relations, NGC, Cassandra Patrovani Sylvester said the rationale behind the NGC’s support of the NAAAs is because of the company’s moral, social and ethical responsibility to the country.

The NGC’s support is also for more practical purposes.

“We are particularly proud that this partnership will also provide much needed assistance with the development and restructuring of our NGC Right on Track Coaching Programme for children and the NGC’s Right on Track Coaching Caravan as a feeder for the NAAA’s primary schools’ programme.”

Patrovani Sylvester said that part of NGC’s corporate social investment policy was for the programmes to result in sustainable economic development.

Trinidad and Tobago’s first Olympic gold medallist Hasely Crawford was also present at the launch.
