Top Trinidad and Tobago athletes, Renny Quow and Michelle-Lee Ahye will highlight the list of athletes at the first Arima Invitational Challenge, at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar on May 10 from 4 p.m.

At the launch of the Games, at the Ministry of Sport Head Office, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain, yesterday, chairman of the Arima Invitational Organising Challenge Committee, former T&T Olympian Ainsley Armstrong said other top T&T athletes like Rondel Sorrillo, Keston Bledman and Jarrin Solomon will also join the event at the newly resurfaced Larry Gomes Stadium.

“We also have All-Americans and athletes from Canada, Jamaica, Guyana, Nigeria and the USA,” Armstrong said.

“It is a very strong field and will be a very good competition--30 events over three hours. We want to run this meet with efficiency, and will be run European style,” Armstrong said, adding that the organising committee purposely is keeping the meet compact to avoid boredom among the fans.

Former director of sport in the Ministry of Sport, Cecil Walker said Arima has provided this country with 15 Olympians to date, and this event was an initiative to keep interest in track and field alive in that constituency.

“We also hope our young kids will become more enthused about track and field and in the development and involvement in the sport that made Arima produce the likes of Neil De Silva, Darrel Brown and more recently Deon Lendore,” Walker said.

“It is time Arima continues to have track meets like we had the Hampton Games and the Trinidad and Tobago Track and Field Championships in the past,” Walker said.

Armstrong advised that invitations for the primary schools division of the programme went out to schools in Arima and environs only.

For the remaining divisions (under-16, under-18 and under-20), invitations were sent to the best athletes in each event from across the country based on the results of meets like the Carifta Trials, held recently at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
