Bledman fails to do Southern Games double

Trinidad and Tobago’s Kamaria Durant had to pull out all the stops to clinch the Southern Games women’s 100 metres Invitational event at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre, yesterday.

Durant, who stopped the clock in a time of 23.90 seconds, had to hold off a stiff duel in deep stretch from St Kitts and Nevis’ Kineke Alexander, who returned in 23.95. Kerneka Beckles of Grenada took bronze in 24.38.

Keston Bledman failed in his bid to capture the sprint double when he was beaten into fifth place in the men’s Invitational 200 metres.

He came off the end in front but was quickly reeled in by eventual winner Antoine Adams of St Kitts/Nevis, Jamaica’s Sheldon Mitchell and Kyle Greaux of Abilene.

Adams returned a time of 21.54 with Mitchell second in 21.68 and Greaux third in 21.76.

Kenya’s Silas Kisorio completed a Southern Games middle distance double when he romped home easily in the men’s 5,000 metres event.

Kisorio, who won the 1,500m on Saturday, led form the start and quickly opened up a five-metre advantage on Guyana’s Cleveland Forde and the T&T pair of Jules La Rode and Akeem Marshall.

Six laps out, Kisorio and Forde separated themselves form Marshall and La Rode who were joined by Allan Hethrington of Canada.

And with three laps remaining the Kenyan increased the tempo to be about 60 metres clear of Forde with the other three contenders a further 100 metres adrift.

He would literally sprint the final two laps to come home well clear in 15 minutes, 16.57 seconds.

Forde was second in 15:30.96 and young Marshall, one of T&T’s Carifta representatives, third in 16:12.40.

Another athlete doubling up was Southern Athletics’ young sprint sensation Adell Colthrust.

He would duplicate his facile win in the Boy’s U-16 100 metres when he scorched the track in the Boys U-16 200 metres to win in 22.83.

Jason Walcott of Simplex took silver in 23.80 with bronze going to Cougars’ Jaden St Louis in 24.19.

T&T’s reigning World Championships 400-metre hurdles champion Jehue Gordon ran a stirring race in the men’s 800 metres but it was not good enough to deny Sharif Webb of the USA.

Webb grabbed gold in a time of one minute, 55.39 seconds.

Gordon returned in 1:56.81 with Guyana’s Cleveland Thomas, third in 1:57.55.

Memphis Pioneers’ Dawnell Collymore was an easy winner of the women’s 800 metres in a time of two minutes, 22.19 seconds. Shania Le Maitre of Rebirth took silver in 2:38.06 with D’Arbadie’s Theophany Salvary taking bronze in 2:43.62.

And Ashton Gill of Cougars clocked two minutes, 00.57 seconds to grab gold in the Boy’s Under-20 800m. Dovers’ Akeem Alexis took silver in 2:03.66 with bronze going to Jevon Joseph of Air Bon Sonics, who returned in 2:05.61.

Petrotrin Palo Seco’s Gwendolyn Smith followed up her second place finish in Saturday’s women’s shot put with gold in the women’s javelin on Day 2 of the 2014 Southern Games at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre.

Smith, the current World Masters Indoor javelin champion, threw the spear 42.46 metres to cop victory from her clubmate Geraldine George, 39.47m, and UWI’s Darlene Lewis, 38.38m.

In the cycling events, Jamaica’s Marloe Rodman took yesterday’s first race for international riders when he came home a cheeky winner of the elimination event. Rodman would bide his time well to deliver a well-timed stretch drive to get the better of the local pair of Varun Maharajh and Adam Alexander in that order.

And outstanding junior Akil Campbell continued where he left off on Saturday with a comfortable win in the 1,500m event. The Rigtec Sonics rider rode patiently to blow past his rivals close to home.

Arima Wheelers’ Sei Daniel took second with Kassim Charles Walcott of Madonna, third.

And Jude Carrington ensured that T&T had a rider in the match sprint final when he got the better of Rodman in their one-off semi-final ride.

However, due to a persistent drizzle, the rest of the cycling events were called off.

Top
