Jehue happy with progress

Alejandro edges Gordon in Falcon 400 hurdles

World champion Jehue Gordon was beaten into second in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the 13th annual THA/Blink B Mobile Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Saturday. Gordon was going for his fifth victory in the one-lap event and started strongly, leading the field coming into the final 100m but Puerto Rico’s Eric Alejandro accelerated over the last two hurdles to out-dip Gordon at the line in a time of 49.92 0.02 seconds.

Another T&T athlete, reigning CAC Champs winner Emanuel Mayers took the bronze (51.11). The victory was the second by Alejandro over Gordon at the Falcon Games, as the Puerto Rican got the better of Gordon (50.79 to 51.13) in a previous meeting. Gordon said despite his second place finish he was satisfied with the run as he is currently completing his final year exams at the University of the West Indies.

“Right now I am under some pressure with final exams at school. As this is my final year, the emphasis is to finish up my school work.” The 2010 World Junior champ added that one of his goals was to get the feel of his pet event. “This is my first 400m race for the year. It was about getting the feel of the race again.” The 23 year old added that he is pleased with his season so far. “The year has been going really good. Training has been really well and I am happy where I am a right now.” Gordon’ next meet is the Jamaican Invitational on May 4.

Meanwhile, Alejandro said he has been working on his finish. “ I have been trying something new and working more on coming home (strong). I have been doing more distance in training, running 800m and 1,000m. My finish has been my downfall in past season.”

In other results, Joel Andrews (D’Abadie Progresive) won the first title of the day, capturing the boys Under-14 long jump with a leap of 1.50m to finish ahead of Jabari Noel (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 1.20m and Joel Duke (Tobago Jaguars) 1.15m. Andrews’ clubmate Brittany Thomas took the girls Under-16 long jump with a distance of 4.74m, which was narrowly ahead of Zenith’s Safiya John (4.73m). Gennisha Graham (Warriors) was third with an effort of 4.63m.

Rain Harper (Memphis) took the girls Under-18 long jump (4.93), while Konnel Jacob (Tobago Jaguars) landed the boys Under-16 shot put gold (13.83).
