Memphis dominates 2nd day of Falcon Games

Memphis Pioneers athletic club had a dominant day on Day 2 of the 13th annual Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on Sunday. Jeminise Parris would start the ball rolling when she emerged a comfortably winner of the Girl’s U-18 100-metre hurdles from Anya Akili of Zenith and Toco Titans’ Kermisha Serapio. Parris took command from the second hurdle and pulled away smoothly to win in 13.88 seconds. Akili returned a time of 14.91 and Serapio, 14.92.

Memphis also produced the winner of the Boy’s U-20 110-metre hurdles event as Rueben Walters delivered a stirring run in deep-stretch to stop the clock at 13.66 seconds. Aaron Lewis had to settle for silver in 14.01 and Christian Hood-Boyce, also of Memphis, third in 14.83.

Young Jesse Frederick kept the Memphis flag flying when he took control of the Boy’s U-18 400-metre event from the halfway stage to run out an easy winner in 50.36 seconds. Cougars’ David George took silver in 51.40 with bronze going to Jeremiah Hamilton of Mayaro in 51.44.

Memphis continued to dominate the one-lap events when Brandon Parris made a move 100 metres into the race and was never challenged in the Boy’s U-20 400-metres. Parris romped home in 48.04 seconds with the Abilene Wildcats pair of Ohdel James and Edwin Phillips second and third in 48.77 and 49.48, respectively.

And the youthful pair of Keone John and Travis Lewis would earn silver and bronze, respectively, in the Boy’s U-10 100m timed final . Cougars’ Kyrell Thomas bagged gold in 14.38 seconds. John clocked 14.44 and Lewis, 14.45.

Memphis also captured the Boy’s U-18 4 x 400m relay in three minutes, 33.77 seconds. Dovers took silver in 3:40.39 and Petrotrin Palo Seco, bronze, in 3:40.66.

In the Girl’s mixed U-16 4 x 400m relay, they had to settle for silver as Cougars secured gold in three minutes, 44.72 seconds. Memphis returned 3:50.00 and bronze went to Petrotrin Palo Seco in 3:50.17.

Away from the track, the club also earned precious metal as Clement Campbell disturbed the sand at 5.95 metres for silver in the Boy’s U-16 long jump. Gold went to Air Bon Sonics’ Josiah Edwards, who produced a best effort of 6.09m and while his clubmate Matthew Graham produced a 5.68m effort for bronze.

In other field events contested, Codrington Elite’s Nicholas Gordon captured the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.93 metres. He established the winning mark with his first attempt and after failing to improve on it with his next two attempts he opted to pass on his final three jumps. Gordon’s clubmate Carl Morgan took silver with a distance of 7.35m with Warriors’ Dwight Herbert collecting bronze with a best effort of 6.91m.

And national shot put record holder Akeem Stewart duly won his pet event. The Tobago Falcons athlete threw the ball 17.11 metres for gold with the Rebirth pair of Hezekiel Romeo and Quincy Wilson earning silver and bronze with throws of 16.96 and 16.23, respectively.

In some field event finals contested during the morning session, Safiya John of Zenith won the Girl’s U-14 high jump when she cleared the bar 1.45 metres on her second attempt. Point Fortin’s Antonia Sealy took silver with her best clearance of 1.38m and Ayeolah John of Petrotrin Palo Seco cleared 1.35m for bronze.

Gold in the Boy’s U-18 discus went to Isaiah Greaves. The D’Abadie athlete registered his best effort of 38.52 metres on his fourth throw while Striders’ Daniel Nish, 38.43m, and Nkosi James of Tobago Falcons, 34.45m, took silver and bronze, respectively.
