CARIFTA 2014 DAY 1 UPDATES

Cedenio, James strike gold

UPDATE 2: Machel Cedenio and Chelsea James struck gold for Trinidad and Tobago on day one of the Carifta Games, in Fort-de-France, MartInique, today.

Cedenio repeated as boys' under-20 400 metres champion with a 45.95 seconds run, whipping silver medallist Nathon Allen (46.97) of Jamaica.

T&T's Asa Guevara claimed bronze in 47.35.

James topped the girls' under-18 shot put field with a big 16.12 metres throw. Her teammate, Akidah Briggs (13.79m) earned bronze.

Nicholas Landeau seized silver in the boys’ under-20 1500m in three minutes, 58.27 seconds.

Also among the medals in the second session, today, were Aaliyah Telesford and Jonathan Farinha.

Telesford picked up silver in the girls' under-20 100m in a wind-assisted 11.42 seconds.

And in the boys' under-20 100m final, Farinha clocked 10.27 seconds to bag bronze.

T&T earned nine medals on day one - two gold, three silver, four bronze.

UPDATE 1: Chelsea James and Portious Warren put Trinidad and Tobago on the medal table on the opening morning of the 2014 Carifta Games, in Fort-de-France, MartInique, today.

James secured silver in the girls’ under-18 discus. The T&T field athlete threw 43.53 metres, forcing Jamaica’s Devia Brown (43.31m) to settle for bronze. Gold went to another Jamaican, Janet Fullerton (46.47m).

T&T also earned bronze in the opening session, Warren producing a 12.70m throw for third spot in the girls’ under-20 shot put. Jamaican Rochelle Frazer (13.63) and Antiguan Jess St John (13.26m) claimed gold and silver, respectively.

Machel Cedenio, Jonathan Farinha and Nicholas Landeau are among the T&T athletes bidding for precious metal in the second session.

Cedenio is defending champion in the boys' under-20 400 metres. Farinha will challenge for honours in the boys' under-20 100m. And England-based Landeau will do battle in the boys' under-20 1500m.
