Successful Carifta team returns with 25 medals

Members of the T&T Carifta team returned home yesterday after a successful four days at the 43rd Carifta Games in Fort-de-France, Martinique. The local contingent bagged 25 medals, inclusive of six gold, seven silver and 12 bronze, to finish second on the medal standings behind perennial Caribbean champions Jamaica. Jamaica ended with a record 88 medals, which included 42 gold, 34 silver and 12 bronze. Barbados rounded off the top three, with 16 medals (five gold, five silver and six bronze).

T&T was led by Machel Cedenio who won two gold medals. Cedenio led the national Boys Under-20 4x400m relay team to gold on Monday afternoon in the last session of the Games. He also won T&T’s first gold medal at the Games, when he won the boys U-20 400m event on Saturday in 45.95 seconds. He teamed up with Asa Guevara, Nathan Farinha and Theon Lewis to clock in 3:06.02, ahead of Jamaica 3:07.71. Kayelle Clarke won T&T’s second gold medal of Monday, copping the girls U-20 200m title in 23.10, ahead of Kadecia Baird, the 400m champion from Guyana in 23.13 and Jamaica’s Kadisha Dallas in 23.69. T&T grabbed two silver medals in the closing session, with Andwelle Wright in the boys U-18 long jump and the girls U-20 4X400m team.

Four national bronze medals were also collected, Jeminise Sade Parris in the U-18 girls 100m hurdles, Ruebin Walters (U-20 boys 110m hurdles), Nicholas Landeau (U-20 Boys 800m) and one from the boys U-18 4X400m relay team. Earlier in the day, Kenejah Williams picked up a silver medal in the U-20 boys shot put. Completing the top ten were Guyana (three gold and one silver), Guadeloupe (three gold and eight bronze), Dominica (two gold), Bahamas (one gold, eight silver and 11 bronze), Grenada (one gold, three silver and two bronze), Bermuda (one gold, three silver and one bronze) and St Lucia (one gold, one silver and one bronze).
