Walcott headlines Twilight Games

A host of Olympians and international athletes including T&T’s Keshorn Walcott and Darrel Brown will line up in their respective track and field events, this evening when the International Twilight Games takes off from 5.30 pm.

The second annual event will take place at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Shot put athlete Cleopatra Borel-Brown and sprinter Richard Thompson are also carded to participate, as are dozens of athletes from around the region, the USA and as far as Nigeria.

The gates open from 4.30 pm, an hour before the first event, a high school 4x100m relay takes place. Other races, including 400m, 800m, 110m hurdles and field events will take place.

According to event coordinator Sean Roach, the event has grown considerably since its inception last year. Thirteen foreign athletes participated last year and has increased to at least 38 this year. Cuba alone will provide 11 athletes. In total, 100 local and foreign athletes will be on show.

Roach said the event originated from an effort to showcase Walcott, this country’s lone gold medalist at the 2012 Olympics, on home soil.

“We realised that many people were not too sure of who Keshorn Walcott was, even after he won gold at the Olympics. Javelin is more popular in Europe. This event came about to give the country a look at Keshorn,” said Roach.

Tickets for the event are $20 for adults and $10 for children. University students and primary and secondary students in uniform may enter free of charge.
