Borel, Rebirth athletes shine at Twilight Games

T&T’s Olympic shot put specialist Cleopatra Borel representing Rebirth lit up the Twilight Games, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, on Friday night, dominating her event with an easy gold medal and a record-breaking effort. Borel was among nine athletes to set new meet records at the Twilight Games’s second edition. Borel threw the shot a whopping 18.83m, for her third and best attempt out of four efforts (all of which passed the 18m mark), which proved considerably stronger than Cuban visitor Yanuvis Lopez (16.64) and Toco Tafac’s Cherisse Murray (13.58). Her best throw bettered last year’s gold winning mark by over a metre.

Her Olympic and club teammate, Keshorn Walcott, the most eagerly anticipated athlete on the night, also did not disappoint in his quest for gold as he claimed just that, and easily, with a 79.33m effort, which was never going to be matched by another Cuban challenger Osman Gonzalez, whose silver-winning best throw was 4.55m behind. Shaquille Waithe, also of Rebirth, finished third with a 71.15m effort. On top of its five gold medal haul, Rebirth athletes took home a total of 13 medals, four silver and four bronze.

Despite a win-assisted finish, Richard Thompson and Darrel Brown, both T&T athletes of Rebirth, took gold and bronze in the men’s 100m dash event. The former set a meet record, clocking 10.10 seconds, while Brown ended in 10.31, just behind Guyana’s Adam Harris (10.23). The standard at this year’s event was evidently improved with the influx of regional and international participants. Cuba’s delegation was well represented by its 800m winner Jorge Martinez and Gilda Aguilera, the women’s 400m dash champion. Martinez (1:47.83m) pipped Rebirth’s Jamaal James (1:48.15) to rewrite the meet record, while Aguilera took the latter event in 52.28 seconds, well ahead of Neon Tracker’ Romona Modeste (54.37).

The United States also enjoyed its share of success, winning the women’s 100m dash with Tawanna Meadows’ 11.18 finish, for another record. The men’ 400m hurdles event was also taken by an American, Jeffery Gibson, while is teammate Frederick Sharpe took bronze. In a domestic high school boys’ 4x100m relay, Queen’s Royal College maintained its status quo as the top team in the country with its record-breaking 43.75 run, edging St Benedict’s College by 0.06 seconds.
