Quow tackles Cedenio in 400 Invitational

Two of Trinidad and Tobago’s top quartermilers, Renny Quow and Machel Cedenio are expected to clash in the Arima Invitational Challenge men’s 400 metres event, at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima, tonight.

The one-lap showdown is the blue riband race on a 30-event programme.

The track at the Larry Gomes Stadium was recently resurfaced, and the meet is being staged to mark the re-opening of the facility.

On Wednesday, Cedenio won the men’s 400m at the Cayman International Invitational, his impressive 45.23 seconds clocking underlining his status as favourite for the one-lap title at the July 22-27 World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

The 45.23 run was a new national Under-20 record, and the man 18-year-old Cedenio relieved of the standard has an opportunity to make a statement at the Arima meet. Quow established the previous T&T under-20 record of 45.74 seconds in winning the world junior title back in 2006 in Beijing, China.

Last Saturday, Quow signalled that he’s returning to his best form with a 200m personal best at the Red Raider Open, in Texas, USA.

The 26-year-old athlete stopped the clock at 20.39 seconds to capture top spot in the race. Quow’s 400m PR (personal record) is 44.53. However, the 2009 World Championship bronze medallist has not dived under 45 seconds since 2011.

The men’s 400m field also includes Jamaican Oral Thompson and American Arte Collins.

Keston Bledman is the favourite for gold in the men’s 100m dash. Among his challengers will be his fellow-T&T sprinter Darrel Brown and Barbadian Ramon Gittens.

And in the women’s 400m, American Jernail Hayes will clash with T&T’s Romona Modeste.

The meet begins at 5 p.m.
