Hampton Games on at Stadium this weekend

The 39th edition of the annual Hampton International Games runs off this weekend at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Hosted by the Hampton Athletic Club, the two-day athletic showpiece is scheduled to begin at 2.30 pm both today and tomorrow.

Hampton’s president and games director, Noel Hyland, said that heats for Caribbean athletes will take place at 9.00 am on the mornings of competition due to the fact that most of them will be arriving today, while heats for local athletes were held on May 3-4.

Competitors from St.Vincent, Guyana, St.Lucia, Barbados, Suriname, French Guyana, Montserrat, Cuba, Jamaica, and the Houston Geo-Bush Texas team of the USA are set to take on some of Trinidad and Tobago’s top athletes such as sprinter Darrel Brown and shot putter Cleopatra Borel.

The USA contingent comprises of Kou Luogon, Ahmad Jamil Hubbard, E. Andrew Brunson 111 and Woodrow Randall.

Luogon is a former Liberian athlete who specialises in the 400m and the 400m hurdles. She won a bronze medal in the hurdles at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique and finished seventh at the 2006 African Championships. She also competed at the 2005 World Championships, the 2009 World Championships and the 2010 World Indoor Championships.

Lougan was a member of Liberia’s 2012 Olympic team but did not compete in the 400m hurdles.

Randall, a sprinter, has an outdoor personal best of 10.20 over 100 metres and 20.80 going 200m. He was a member of the Codrington Elite Athletic Club that participated at last month’s Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Randall will once more face Brown who he relegated to fourth when copping third place in the Falcon Games 100m in a time of 10.46 seconds.

Jamica, will be by Riker Hylton, Elaine Thompson and Janieve Russell.

Russell was a gold medallist in the women’s 400m hurdles at the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain in 2012. She produced a then personal best and world leading time of 56.62 seconds. And Hylton, a quarter-miler, was a member of Jamaica’s bronze medal 4 x 400m relay team at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu. He did not qualify for the individual 400m at the London 2012 Olympics but was a member of his country’s 4 x 400m relay squad where he ran the second leg in the heats.

Jose Luis, Dulaimis Debroah and Arialis Josefa will be flying the flag for Cuba.

Entry on both days is $30, with free admission to children under the age of 12 years. Gates open at 11.00 am both days and tickets can be purchased at the venue on each day.
