Borel adds another title at Hampton

Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) Olympian and national women’s shot put champion Cleopatra Borel made light work of the opposition in her pet event on Day Two of the 2014 Hampton International Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on Sunday.

Brown’s winning effort of 18.14 metres was no way near her personal best of 19.42 set in 2011 but it was over five metres more than her nearest challenger, Toco’s Portious Warren, who had a best throw of 12.84m. Kechell Douglas of UTT threw the iron ball 10.55m for bronze.

Meanwhile, Neon Trackers Reyare Thomas also flew T&T’s flag to victory when she powered her way to victory in the women’s Invitational 200 metres event. Thomas got a flyer at the off and was clearly in the lead after the first 50 metres.

Jade Bailey of Barbados would range alongside coming of the bend but Thomas quickly changed gears to pull away with Cuba’s Arialis Grandulla putting in her best work at the end. The winner returned in 23.43 seconds with the Cuban copping silver in 23.71 and Bailey getting the bronze in 23.84.

Ahmad Jamil Hubbard bagged men’s Invitational 200 metres gold when he reeled in the Abilene Wildcat pair of Jonathan Farinha and Kyle Greaux to stop the clock at 20.68 seconds. Farinha came off the bend in front with Zwede Hewitt and Greaux breathing down his neck while Hubbard was hitting top speed in the centre of the track. The American would prevail in the drive to the line with Greaux, 20.71, just edging Farinha, 20.72, for silver.

In the men’s 200m event, Guyana’s Elton Bollers bagged gold with a 21.03 seconds clocking. Julius Morris of Montserrat Track took silver in 21.35 with ZC Athletics Club’s Kevin Haynes claiming bronze in 21.52. Boy’s U-20 200 metres gold was won by Barbados’ pacers Track Club athlete Levi Cadogan in a time of 21.18 with St Vincent’s Reuberth Boyde taking silver in 21.37 and Micah Ballantayne of Alpha Athletics, the bronze, in 21.46.

And Zentih’s Zakiya Denoon delivered a golden run in the Girl’s U-20 200 metres. She stopped the clock in 23.98 seconds with Tsai-Ann Joseph of Abilene second in 24.26 and Trishelle Leacock also of Zenith, third in 24.49.

Brandon Parris of St Vincent romped to an easy win in the Boy’s U-20 800 metres event in a time of one minute, 54.71 seconds. Tropical Runners’ Uracio Seedorf copped silver in 1:57.01 and Akeem Alexis of Dovers, bronzes, in 1:58.15.

Cuba’s Leandro Zamora won gold in the men’s Invitational 400 metres hurdles event in a time of 52.41 seconds. Jamal james of rebirth claimed silver in 54.06 and Pacers’ Akeim David registering 55.66 for the bronze medal.

Neon Trackers’ Jenea Spinks and Kendis Bullard of Defence Force were two of several athletes who emerged double crown winners over the weekend. Spinks added Girls’ U-18 200 metres gold to the 100m title she won on Saturday while Bullard followed up on his 1,500m victory with gold in the men’s 800m event.

Spinks returned in 24.66 second to win from Memphis’ Jeminise Parris, 24.96, and Jevina Sampson of Guyana’s Running Brave, 25.01, while Bullard breasted the tape in 1.52.73 from BSC’s Kerime Morris, 1:53.64, and Quincy Elliot, also of Defence Force, in 1:53.97.

Kelvin Johnson, running unattached, was a facile winner of the men’s 5,000 metres event from UWI’s Collin Pereira and D’Abadie Progressive’s Daniel Elie. Johnson cover the trip in 15.41.69 while Pereira and Elie returned times of 16.44.21 and 16.59.50, respectively.

Tobago Falcons’ field athlete Akeem Stewart added men’s discus gold to the shot put title he captured on Saturday when he threw the disc 47.50 metres. Keon Francis of UWI took silver with a best effort of 47.38m while bronze went to Striders’ Micah McNish, who produced 43.68m.

Adrian Williams, competing unattached, claimed an easy victory in the men’s javelin when he threw the spear 62.18 metres. Zenith’s Vandell Joseph copped silver with a best effort of 49.78 with Nimrod John of Mercury taking bronze with a best throw of 49.03.

In relay action, Abilene’s B team of Jacob St Clair, Corey Stewart, Jerod Elcock and Jared Thomas combined to defeat their A team counterparts; James Ohdel, Nathan Farinha, Jonathan Farinha and Jamoul Pierre in the Boy’s U-20 4 x 400m showpiece. The B outfit clocked 3.14.65 to the A squad 3.15.86 while Point Fortin New Jets took third in 3.18.31.

And Guyana’s Running Brave youthful squad Avon Samuel, Neise Allen, Natricia Hooper and Kevina Sampson defied the odds to win the women’s 4 x 400m relay. They were timed in 3.47.52 with Neon Trackers bagging silver (3.51.87) and bronze going to Memphis Pioneers (3.55.99).
