Riley, Noreiga, Russell top T&T Masters

Irma Riley, Nicole Alleyne-Noriega and Kenrick Russell each captured five gold medals at the recently held Trinidad and Tobago Association of Masters Athletes (TTAMA) 29th annual Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Riley swept the throws disciplines winning the shot put (5.79 metres), discus (17.13), javelin (16.80), hammer (8.94) and weight (6.82) events in the women’s 70 to 74 age group. The retired school teacher.

took the shot put ahead of her sister Ruby Jackson (5.62) to revert the order at the 2013 championships and retained her discus and javelin crowns.

Alleyne-Noreiga impressed in the women’s 40-44 category securing the 60m (9.30 seconds) and 100m (14.87) sprints as well as the discus (11.52 metres), javelin (15.78) and weight (5.74) throws. Russell was the lone male five gold medals champ, taking the men’s 65 to 69 shot put, discus (23.23), javelin (27.88), hammer (23.18) and weight (8.04) throws.

Cheryl Reyes, James Bristol, Terrance Skinner, Janice Quashie, Ahmad Assidiq and Oswald Rogers were quadruple champions while world champions Gwendolyn Smith, Rodney Liverpool, Andy Montique, Maureen Pierre-John, Irma Thomas, Joyce Thomas, Robert Stevenson and Monica Tang-Wing won three events each.

Reyes was the winner of the women’s 55 to 59 60m, 100m, shot put and discus events while Bristol landed the men’s 55 to 59 shot put, discus, hammer and weight throws. Skinner ran away with the men’s 60m, 100m and 200m sprints as well as the long jump with Quashie was first to the line in the men’s 60 to 64 800m, 1500m, 5000m run and 5000m walk. Assidiq swept the men’s 65 to 69 60m, 100m, 200m and 400m races while Rogers emerged champion in the men’s 75 to 79 60m, 100m, 200m and long jump.

Reigning World Indoor javelin champion Gwendolyn Smith landed the women’s 45 to 49 shot put (12.84), discus (27.96) and javelin (34.25) disciplines while 2013 world outdoor high jump gold medallist Liverpool finished top the podium in the men’s 35 to 39 high jump (1.90), javelin (6.55) and 60m (7.70). Montique, the 2013 world outdoor 100m champion, ran way with the men’s 45 to 49 60m (7.27), 100m (11.68) and 200m (22.93).

Another World Indoor champion Martin Prime led the list of double champions with Renee McFarlane-Peruse, Philbert Ryce, Jules La Rode, Kade Sobers, Wade Franklyn, Wayne Marcano and Ruby Jackson. Prime took the men’s 54 to 54 100m and 400m.

The Championships served as trials for selection on this country’s team for this year’s bi-ennial North American, Central American and Caribbean Masters Championships in Costa Rica in August.
