Noel claims ‘Manny Ramjohn’ 100m

UTT Fast Track’s Le Sean Noel copped men’s 100 metres gold at the 2014 Manny Ramjohn Games when he powered down the mondo track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain to top Section Four of the time final in 10:64 seconds, yesterday.

Noel had to stave off a determined challenge from Kyle Greaux of Abilene, who was putting in his best work at the end. Greaux took silver in 10.70 with his clubmate Ayodele Taffe claiming bronze in 10.74 as Section 4 produced the top three.

Greaux would make amends when he scorched the track in 20.92 seconds to top the field in Section two of the men’s 200m time final and claim overall gold in an event dominated by his club. The Abilene pair of Jonathan Farinha and Taffe took silver when they both produced times of 21.22 seconds in Section one and three, respectively.

Farinha, who won his section from Memphis’ Courtney Bascombe, 21.36, and Darren Nelson of Alpha Athletics, 21.97, was left to rue his decision to shut it down 20 metres from home as it probably cost him the gold medal.

In the women’s 100m, Concorde’s Lisa Wickham, Mauricia Preito of Point Fortin and Abilene’s Tsai-Anne Joseph filled the top three positions in section one to claim gold, silver and bronze, respectively. The winner stopped the clock in 11.73 seconds with Preito returning in 11.77 and Joseph, 12.12.

Preito was made to fill the runner-up berth for a second time on the evening when Petrotrin’s Kayelle Clarke battled gamely to win the women’s 200m in 24.11 seconds. Her challenge down the homestretch narrowed the gap considerably but not enough to deny Clarke the win. Preito registered a time of 24.26 while Kadisha Francois of UTT took bronze in 25 seconds flat.

Defence Force’s Kendis Bullard pulled off what seemed like an unlikely victory in the men’s 800m event when his clubmate Clifton Sylvester pulled up when well clear of his rivals.

Sylvester made the early running and had opened a 30-metre advantage on the chasing pack when he suddenly stopped running about 200 metres from the finish. Branches’ Kerime Morris hit the front but Bullard would wear him down close home to prevail in a time of one minute, 53.14 seconds with Morris second in 1:53.86 and Devery Robley of Cougars third in 1:54.78.

And Memphis Pioneers’ Dawnell Collymore registered one of the easiest victories on the evening when she romped home in the women’s 800 metres in a time of two minutes, 15.12 seconds. Collymore led from the off to come home well clear of Toco Titans’ Elia Nero, 2:19.07, who was made to work hard to hold off Shirley Stapleton of Cougars, 2:19.11, for silver.

Tsai-Anne Joseph complimented her bronze medal effort in the women’s 100m with women’s 400m gold. She got home in a time of 57.44 seconds with Memphis’ Kafi Ottley second in 57.61 and Danielle David of Point Fortin third in 58.43.

And Joseph’s teammate Asa Guevara ensured Abilene also captured the men’s 400m when he produced a time of 47.93 seconds to top Section I of the time final. Niall Thomas, another Abilene athlete, earned silver when he topped Section 3 in a time of 49.14 with runner-up Anika Prince of Defence Force claiming bronze with his 49.20 clocking.

Top
