Farinha wins at Junior Champs

Jonathan Farinha underlined his class with a superb run in the boys’ under-20 100 metres final, on day one of the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA)/NGC Junior Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

John Mark Constantine held the early advantage. At the 70-metre mark, however, Farinha surged past his rival and seized control of the race. Farinha clocked a personal best 10.25 seconds, while Constantine clocked 10.35 to claim silver. The top four finishers dived under the 10.55 seconds World Juniors standard. Third-placed Micah Ballantyne got home in 10.43, while Holland Cabara was fourth in 10.54.

Three sprinters bettered the 11.70 seconds World Junior Championship standard in the girls’ under-20 100m final. Zakiya Denoon was the class of the field, winning in 11.41 seconds, from Aaliyah Telesford (11.52) and Kayelle Clarke (11.59). Theon Lewis emerged victorious in the boys’ under-20 400m final. Lewis completed his lap of the track in 47.09 seconds—well inside the 47.50 World Juniors qualifying time. Ohdel James finished second in 47.56, missing the standard by 0.06.

In the boys’ under-20 110m hurdles, Aaron Lewis and Ruebin Walters made light work of the 14.20 seconds World Juniors standard. Lewis won in 13.80, with Walters second in 13.85. The wind reading, however, was 2.1 metres per second—marginally above the 2.0 legal limit.

Wind was also a spoiler in the boys’ under-18 long jump. Andwuelle Wright disturbed the sand at 7.60 metres—five centimetres better than the 7.55m World Juniors qualifying mark—but was aided by a 2.4 metres per second tail wind. Wright’s best legal jump yesterday was 7.02m.

There were impressive performances, too, from Kenejah Williams and Tyriq Horsford. Williams threw the iron ball 16.53m for gold in the boys’ under-20 shot put. And in the boys’ under-18 javelin, Horsford won with a 60.04m throw, while silver was bagged by Vandel Joseph (59.56m).

The National Junior Championships continue from 9 a.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
