Farinha, Denoon double up at Junior Champs

Abilene Wildcats’ Jonathan Farinha completed the sprint double at the National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) Junior Championships when he romped to victory in the boys’under-20 200 metres final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

Farinha, who captured the boys’ under-20 100 metres title on Saturday, got a flyer out of the blocks in lane four and had the measure of the field before they approached the bend. He accelerated coming off the backstretch to win easing down in a time of 20.68 seconds from clubmate Holland Cabara, 21.47, and Alpha Athletics’ Micah Ballantyne, 21.74.

He achieved another double in that his time bettered the 21.20 seconds World Junior Championship standard as well as the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championship standard of 21.30 seconds.

Terry Frederick of Point Fortin New Jets also achieved the CAC Junior standard of one minute, 59 seconds when he executed a well-planned race to capture the boys’ under-18 800 metres event in a time of 1:56.84.

Frederick was content to settle in third position during the first lap, which was covered in 56 seconds. He then changed gears to wear down the front running Myles Jackson of Memphis, who also attained the CAC standard in finishing second in 1:58.53. Zenith’s Miguel Hackette took third in 2:01.08.

Neon Trackers’ Jenea Spinks was denied attaining the CAC Junior standard of 24.40 seconds when she won the girls’ under-18 200 metres in 24.34 seconds but had a wind of 3.6 metres per second at her back, which was above the 2.0 legal limit. Spinks prevailed after a stretch duel with Memphis’ Jeminise Parris, who returned in 24.61 with Kadesha Prescott of Concorde third in 25.90.

And Zakiya Denoon added the girls’ under-20 200 metres crown to the 100m title she won on Saturday. The Zenith sprinter had to fend off a determined Kayelle Clarke of Petrotrin to prevail in 23.23 seconds. Clarke took second in 23.29 with Point Fortin’s Aaliyah Telesford third in 23.54.

Toco Tafac’s Ayanna Glasgow amassed 4,285 points to capture the girls’ under-18 heptathlon. The Zenith’s pair of Anya Akili and Khemani Roberts took second and third with totals of 4,022 and 3,974, respectively. All three athletes achieved the CAC Junior standard.

Kevin Roberts won the boys’ under-20 decathlon when he completed his ten-event assignment with a total of 5,916 points. Victor Isaac of Toco Tafac amassed 5, 675 points for second while the 4,482 collected by Point Fortin New Jets’ Tauren George assured him of third place. Both Roberts and Isaac eclipsed the CAC Junior standard of 5, 600 points.

And Falcons’ Omari Benoit eclipsed the CAC Junior standard of 1.95 metres when he cleared the bar at 2.05m to win the boys’ under-18 high jump. Kristian La Touche of Memphis had a best clearance of 1.80m for second with Tariq Dann clearing 1.65m for third.
