Frederick scores impressive ‘Juvenile’ double

Timothy Frederick scored an impressive double on the opening day of the NGC/NAAA Juvenile Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

Frederick was unchallenged for gold in the Boys’ Under-14 400 metres, the Point Fortin athlete winning in 56.18 seconds, from Cougars’ Ethan Forde (59.12) and Petrotrin Palo Seco’s Chaz Alexander (59.59).

About half-hour later, Frederick returned to the track for the 100m final. He clocked 11.73 seconds to top the field, forcing Simplex’s Joshua Butler (11.84) and Concorde’s Shakeel John (11.91) to settle for silver and bronze, respectively.

Patrice Richards was also outstanding, striking gold in the Girls’ Under-14 60m hurdles and 400m flat events.

Richards stopped the clock at 10.42 seconds for victory in the hurdles, the Neon Trackers athlete beating Melissa Boxhill (10.58) and Point Fortin’s Antonia Sealy (10.77) into second and third, respectively.

And in the 400m, Richards won in 58.32 seconds, from Janeil Morris (58.95) of Memphis Pioneers and Petrotrin Palo Seco’s Diane Hamilton (1:00.50).

With 50 metres to go in the Girls’ Under-12 800m, Zenith’s Ariel Villariel surged past D’Abadie’s Faith Salvary. Villariel opened up a big gap on her rival, winning the two-lap race in two minutes, 49.88 seconds. Though fading at the end, Salvary held on bravely for silver in 2:54.40, while bronze was bagged by Karessa Kirton (2:58.13) of Cougars.

Aaliyah Mitchell was dominant in the Girls’ Under-14 1,000m. The Abilene Wildcats runner completed her two-and-a-half laps of the track in 3:09.44, finishing about 110 metres ahead of silver medallist Camille Lewis (3:30.30) of Valencia. The bronze went to Zenith’s Kelly-Ann Murray (3:31.59).

Daniel Qui was in a class of his own in the Boys’ Under-12 cricket ball throw, the Silver Bullet athlete producing a big 53.29 metres effort for a huge cushion on second-placed Zuriel Edwards (43.91m) of Petrotrin Palo Seco. Cougars athlete, Terron Celestine (42.00m) picked up bronze.

Zenith’s Safiya John cleared the bar at 1.46m to top the field in the Girls’ Under-14 high jump. Sealy (1.43m) and Shannon Daniel (1.35m) of Tobago Falcons finished second and third, respectively.

John was also golden in the cricket ball throw, her 48.91m effort earning her victory, ahead of St Mary’s Home athlete Crystal Gibbs (45.21) and the unattached Shakira Crosby (42.97m).

The Juvenile Championships continue from ten o’clock this morning.
