Johnson, Nero take 5K honours

Guyanese runner Kelvyn Johnson and top Trinidad and Tobago female road athlete Tonya Nero copped the top prizes of $1,000 in the 2014 Sugar to Energy 5K (kilometres) at Gilbert Park, California, yesterday.

Johnson was followed closely by fellow Guyanese Lionel Dandrade with Jules La Rode grabbing third place ahead of the evergreen 46-year-old Curtis Cox.

The next three places were all very promising under-19 juniors, namely Jevon Joseph, Matais Nero and Abijah Phillip.

Tonya Nero was eighth overall, but she had to pull out all the stops to pip Jenelle Nedd by just one second with Shania Francis in third. Fourth place was another 46-year-old veteran Christine Regis. Among the notable back markers was 61-year old Susannah Joefield, who has frequently represented T&T in International Masters events.

The oldest finisher was 77-year-old Roy Riley; the still very sprightly Riley managed to place 54th in the field of over 100 starters.

The 7 a.m. start time allowed even the race trailers to get back to Gilbert Park just before clear skies gave way to a heavy downpour. This year the Sugar to Energy race was organised by the Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce with generous sponsorsip support from RBC Royal Bank.
