Sorrillo wins in Florida

Trinidad and Tobago’s Rondel Sorrillo produced a fast 20.22 seconds run to grab gold in the men’s 200 metres, at the Star Athletics Sprint Meet in Clermont, Florida, USA, on Saturday.

Sorrillo is 10th on the 2014 world performance list with his 20.22 run. The clocking is the second fastest half-lap time of his career, behind his 20.16 personal best. American Dedric Dukes leads the world at 19.97.

In the 200m “B” race, T&T sprinters Emmanuel Callender and Moriba Morain finished first and third, respectively, clocking 20.85 and 21.05.

Sorrillo earned silver in the 100m dash in 10.21 seconds, the gold going to American Justin Gatlin in 10.05. Germany’s Martin Keller (10.22) finished third, while Callender clocked 10.34 for fourth spot.

T&T’s Mikel Thomas won the 100m “B” race in a wind-assisted 10.20.

In the qualifying round, Sorrillo won heat three in 10.22 seconds, while Thomas was second in the same race in 10.34. Callender got to the line in a wind-aided 10.24 to top heat five.

Thomas was the class of the men’s 110m hurdles field, striking gold with a windy 13.38 seconds run.

In the men’s 400m, Jarrin Solomon bagged bronze in 46.20 seconds. Another T&T quartermiler, Ade Alleyne-Forte finished third in the “B” race in 47.21.

At the British Virgin Islands (BVI) Twilight Invitational, in Tortola, Alena Brooks returned a time of two minutes, 06.31 seconds to seize silver in the women’s 800m.

The T&T half-miler finished just behind American Kimmarra McDonald, the winner in 2:06.12.

T&T sprinter Geronne Black was seventh in the women’s 100m dash in 11.85 seconds. American Tawanna Meadows was victorious in 11.28.

Last Thursday, at the USATF New York Open and Masters Championships, Lalonde Gordon was triumphant in the men’s 200m in 20.41 seconds.

Another T&T athlete, Adrian Crichlow clocked 21.36 to win the men’s 30-34 200m event.

Andre Marcano earned silver in the men’s 100m dash in 10.60 seconds. And in the 400m, Odou Hazel clocked 47.36 to secure fourth spot.
