Lebron shines at Juvenile Champs

Having a famous name can sometimes be a burden, the expectation of success weighing heavily on the shoulders.

Young Lebron James, however, was equal to the task on the second and final day of the NGC/NAAA Juvenile Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday (Sunday).

Carrying the same name as the basketball megastar who hopes to lead his Miami Heat to a three-peat of NBA titles this month, young James dominated his rivals in the boys’ under-10 cricket ball throw. The Tobago Falcons athlete won with a 47.31 metres effort--almost six metres better than second-placed Zion Pierre (41.34m) of Oasics. Terrell Coombs (35.35m) of Striders finished third.

Point Fortin’s Timothy Frederick maintained his dominance in the boys’ under-14 age-group, winning the 200m final to take his tally of individual gold medals to three.

Winner of the 100m and 400m events on day one, Frederick completed a rare treble success with victory in yesterday’s 200m in 23.89 seconds. Cougars athlete Ethan Forde secured silver in 24.23, while bronze was bagged by Concorde’s Renaldo McEachnie (24.36).

Frederick’s work was not yet done. In the final event of the Championships, the boys’ under-14 sprint medley relay, Frederick anchored Point Fortin to victory in one minute, 44.27 seconds.

Stephon Caesar, Kyle Bridgewater and Malachi Lam ran the first three legs for Point Fortin, Lam handing off to Frederick with the team second, about five metres behind Cougars. But after only 80 metres of the 300-metre leg, Frederick was in front--and he stayed there, despite a gallant effort from Forde, the Cougars anchor finishing just behind Frederick to hand his team silver in 1:44.36. Abilene Wildcats clocked 1:48.99 to bag bronze.

Safiya John also captured three individual gold medals at the two-day Championships.

On Saturday, the Zenith athlete emerged victorious in the girls’ under-14 high jump and cricket ball throw events. Yesterday, John earned title number three, disturbing the sand at 4.60m for gold in the long jump.

Silver went to Jeneil Morris (4.34m) of Memphis Pioneers, while bronze was bagged by Toco TAFAC’s Twanna Homeward (3.99m).

John was also on show yesterday in the 800m. She returned a time of 3:01.68 to finish seventh in a race that featured Aaliyah Mitchell and the clock.

Winner of the 1,000m on day one by more than 20 seconds, Mitchell was again in uncompromising mood in the 800m. She topped the two-lap field in an impressive 2:21.89, the Abilene athlete getting home with some 60 metres of daylight to spare on silver medallist Caliyah Wallace (2:34.22) of Cougars. Valencia’s Camille Lewis (2:34.77) finished third.
