LENDORE STRIKES NCAA GOLD

Bronze for Borel at Diamond League meet

Deon Lendore completed an impressive double at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, USA, late on Friday.

The Texas A&M University student earned the men’s 400 metres title in 45.02 seconds to add to the NCAA indoor crown he had captured in March, in New Mexico.

“I was trying to get the double because it’s a nice double to have,” said Lendore, in an interview on the Texas A&M website, www.aggieathletics.com. “So I’m thankful I accomplished that goal.

“It’s always good to get the win,” the Trinidad and Tobago quartermiler continued, “even if the time wasn’t great. Even though I didn’t execute my race the way I wanted I’m happy to come out here and do my best and get the win for my team.”

Lendore outleaned Mike Berry at the line, the University of Oregon student claiming silver in 45.07 seconds, ahead of his fellow-American, Louisiana State University (LSU) athlete Vernon Norwood (45.45).

Another T&T/Texas A&M athlete, Janeil Bellille clocked 56.14 seconds to secure bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles.

Late yesterday, T&T’s Wayne Davis II bagged bronze in the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.24 seconds. The Texas A&M senior was the defending champion. Another T&T athlete, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student Durell Busby finished seventh in 13.70.

Cleopatra Borel was impressive at the Adidas Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, in New York, yesterday. The T&T athlete threw 19.04 metres to finish third in the women’s shot put. New Zealand’s world and Olympic champion Valerie Adams won with a 19.68m effort, while second spot went to American Michelle Carter (19.51m).

T&T sprinter Keston Bledman was third in the men’s 100m dash. Running into a 1.9 metres per second headwind, Bledman got to the line in 10.23 seconds. The top two spots went to Jamaicans Nesta Carter (10.09) and Yohan Blake (10.21).

T&T’s reigning world champion Jehue Gordon finished seventh in the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.81 seconds. Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson (48.03), American Michael Tinsley (48.56) and South African Cornel Fredericks (48.58) were first, second and third, respectively.

And T&T’s Lalonde Gordon was eighth in the men’s 400m in 45.68 seconds. The race was won by American LaShawn Merritt in 44.19, from South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk (44.38) and Bahamian veteran Chris Brown (44.61).
