Sorrillo, Thomas win at President’s Classic

Rondell Sorrillo took the 100 metres sprint at the 2014 President’s Classic yesterday at Hasely Crawford Stadium, clocking 10.47 seconds to cruise to victory in the marquee event.

Sorrillo, running for La Brea Athletics eased into the race on a windy Saturday evening, and was comfortable in the end in edging LeSean Noel of UTT Fast Track, who stopped the clock at 105.8. Courtney Bascombe (Memphis Pioneers; 10.63) was third.

Sorrillo’s fellow national athlete, Reyare Thomas (Neon Trackers), grabbed the women’s equivalent in 11.48 in tougher circumstances, only eduging Kamaria Durant (11.49) of Simplex by a split second.

Jonathan Farinha (Abilene Wildcats) won the Boys Under-20 100m sprint as expected, his 10.44 seconds enough for victory over teammate Holland Cabara (10.62), while Akanni Hislop (Zenith) won the Boys Under-18 equivalent.

Jenea Spinks (12.36) of Neon Trackers was the Girls Under-18 100m winner.

Over 200m, Jereem Richards (Abilene Wildcats; Men), Asa Guevara (Abilene Wildcats; Boys Under-20), Timothy Frederick (Point Fortin New Jets; Boys Under-14) and Caliyah Wallace (Cougars; Girls Under-14) were the winners.

And Josanne Lucas, T&T’s former World Championships bronze medallist in the 400m hurdles event, won the women’s 100m hurdles for Tobago Falcons in 13.73, an easy victory over second-place Akila McShine (Cougars; 14.08)

Other notable results saw Alena Brooks (Memphis Pioneers) take the women’s 800m in 2:07.65, and Jamaal James (Rebirth) took the men’s version with a 1:50.54 run. Hezekial Romeo (Rebirth; 17.15m) beat clubmate Quincy Wilson (16.85m) to the men’s shot put title, and Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons; 13.97m) won among the women in that event.

Seon Michael Stafford of Defence Force had a best throw of 7.10m to take the men’s long jump, while his clubmate George Smith (4:05.79) led an Army to the podium in winning the men’s 1500m.
