World juniors team announced

Just over two weeks following the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships conclude in Guatemala, 20 of T&T’s elite junior athletes, led by world No 1-ranked 400m runner Machel Cedenio, will make their way to Eugene, Oregon, USA, to challenge the 15th edition of the IAAF World Junior Championship, which runs from July 22-27. More than 1,700 athletes under the age of 20 from 177 countries are expected to challenge the biggest stage for junior athletics and what being claimed as the largest ever IAAF event on US soil.

T&T’s 20-person squad has been described as “a formidable force” by the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA). Along with Cedenio, T&T is expected to be well represented by top 100m sprinters Zakiya Denoon, Aaliyah Telesford, Jonathan Farinha and John Mark Constantine. Farinha is currently ranked at ninth in the world in the 100m and 12th in the 200m. Ruebin Walters, the world’s seventh-ranked 110m hurdler is also included, as is the 4x400m relay runners Cedenio, Asa Guevara, Nathan Farinha, Theon Lewis, who won gold at the Carifta Games. Meanwhile, the IAAF has appointed T&T’s four-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon, along with Joanna Hayes and Jackie-Joyner-Kersee as ambassadors to the World Junior Championship.
