Thompson breaks record

Rebirth’s Richard Thompson broke his own national men’s 100 metre record yesterday afternoon, stopping the clock in 9.82 seconds to win gold on day two of the NGC/Sagicor Open Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, last night. Thompson, who held the previous record of 9.85 since 2011, was in a different class yesterday. At approximately the 60-metre mark Thompson, running out of lane three, already had a five-metre lead and gold was certain for the Olympic athlete.

Finishing behind Thompson was Simplex athlete Keston Bledman in a time of 10.00, while Thompson’s Rebirth team-mate Darrel Brown was third in 10.05. After the record breaking run Thompson was congratulated by his competitors and 100m women’s champion Michelle-Lee Ahye. A special moment followed, as Thompson called for his one-year-old son Rhys to join him on the track to celebrate. Thompson placed his son on his shoulders, capping off a memorable moment for the Thompson family.

Earlier, Abilene Wildcats athlete Jonathan Farinha was disqualified from the 100m men’s final for a false start, adding more tention to the race. Before the men’s 100m final, Thompson’s Rebirth team-mate Lee-Ahye easily won the women’s 100m final in 10.88, ahead of Air Bon Sonics’ Kai Selvon (11.32) and Reyare Thomas of Neon Trackers (11.37). In the semifinals, Lee-Ahye ran a lightning time of 10.85. The national record is 10.83, set by Kelly Ann Baptiste on June 22 last year. Following the sprints, a star-studded cast including Renny Quow, Lalonde Gordon and Jarrin Solomon lined up for the finals of the men’s 400m. Entering the last 100m Gordon had the lead. However, the Nike athlete could not hang on, as Zenith athlete Quow came back to edge Gordon on the line to win gold in 45.073, just ahead of Gordon in 45.077. Solomon grabbed bronze in 45.59. Action on the last day today begins at 2.30 pm.
