2014 NGC/Sagicor Open Championships

New PR for Waithe

Shakeil Waithe established a new personal record (PR) in the men’s javelin, the 2014 Carifta Games boys’ under-20 champion hurling the spear 72.75m. With Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott opting out of the meet, Waithe’s big throw was good enough for gold. Silver was seized by Cuban Osmani Laffita (68.30m).

Lalonde golden in men's half-lap

Lalonde Gordon won the men's 200m final in 20.38 seconds, beating 400m champion Renny Quow (20.41) into second spot. Kyle Greaux (20.59) finished third.

Ahye completes sprint double

Michelle-Lee Ahye struck gold in the women's 200 metres in 22.95 seconds. In the qualifying round, she had clocked a personal best 22.77. Reyare Thomas seized silver in 23.17, while bronze went to Kayelle Clarke in 23.44. On Saturday, Ahye won the 100m title in 10.88.

Gold for Wilson, Alexander, Williams, Glasgow

Quincy Wilson won the men's discus with a 54.93 metres throw. Ayanna Alexander produced a 5.87m leap for gold in the women's long jump. Dominica's Brendan Williams cleared the bar at 2.03m to capture the men's high jump title. And Ayanna Glasgow accumulated 4,062 points to grab women's heptathlon gold.

Borel dominates

Cleopatra Borel threw 18.63 metres for a comfortable victory in the women's shot put. Cubans Yaniuvis Lopez and Sahily Viart were second and third, respectively, throwing 17.37m and 15.67m.

Brooks golden in women's two-lap

Alena Brooks dominated her rivals in the women's 800m, winning the two-lap race in 2:08.32. Second-placed Dawnel Collymore clocked 2:17.43.

Cuban wins men's 800

Cuban Andy Gonzalez returned a time of one minute, 48.39 seconds to win the men's 800 metres final. T&T runners, Jamaal James and Kendis Bullard finished second and third, respectively, clocking 1:48.57 and 1:48.64.

Mayers beats Jehue

Good day. Welcome to day two coverage of the NGC/Sagicor National Open Track & Field Championships.

Emanuel Mayers captured the men's 400 metres hurdles title in 49.57 seconds, forcing world champion Jehue Gordon to settle for silver in 49.69.

Quow edges Lalonde in thriller

Renny Quow edged Lalonde Gordon in a thrilling men's 400 metres final.

Gordon held the advantage coming off the final turn. But Quow was stronger in the final stages of the race, overhauling Gordon at the line to win in 45.08 seconds, the same time produced by second-placed Gordon. Quow beat his rival by just four-thousandths of a second.

Bellille breaks 16-year-old record

Janeil Bellille broke a 16-year-old record, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete clocking 51.83 seconds to improve on the 51.96 T&T standard established by Beverly Pierre way back in 1998.

Ahye in 10.88

Michelle-Lee Ahye clocked 10.88 seconds to capture the women's 100 metres title. In the semifinal round she had produced a 10.85 run - a new personal best and the fastest time in the world in 2014.
In the final, Kai Selvon was a distant second in 11.32 seconds, while bronze went to Reyare Thomas in 11.37.

Torpedo in record run

Richard "Torpedo" Thompson won the men's 100 metres title in 9.82 seconds - a new national record and the fastest time in the world this year. Keston Bledman was second in 10 seconds flat, while third spot went to Darrel Brown in 10.05.

Ahye leads the world

Michelle-Lee Ahye clocked a personal best and world-leading time in the women's 100 metres semis. The Trinidad and Tobago sprinter clocked 10.85 seconds to win the second heat. The clocking was just two-hundredths of a second outside the 10.83 national record, established by Kelly-Ann Baptiste at the National Championships last year.

Davis strikes gold in sprint hurdles

Good afternoon, and welcome to our coverage of the 2014 NGC/Sagicor Open Track & Field Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Wayne Davis II is among the athletes who have struck gold this afternoon. Davis topped the men's 110 metres hurdles field in a Championship record time of 13.21 seconds, beating Mikel Thomas (13.45) and Durell Busby (13.64) into second and third, respectively.

Deborah John emerged victorious in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.36 seconds, finishing ahead of Josanne Lucas (13.41) and Cuban Belkis Milanes (13.43).

There were titles too for George Smith in the men's 1500 metres (4:00.64), Dawnel Collymore in the women's 1500m (4:48.31), Deandra Daniel in the women's high jump (1.75m), Cuba's Yarianna Martinez in the women's triple jump, and Akeem Stewart in the men's shot put (17.76m).
