‘Torpedo’ Thompson sets new national record

RICHARD ‘Torpedo’ Thompson showed why he has been labeled a torpedo yesterday when he blazed his way to a new national record and gold medal in the Men’s 100 metre final at the Sagicor National Track and Field Championship at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Only a day after he cruised to the semis and later final of the 100 metre dash, Thompson left the best for last, sprinting to a fast 9.82 seconds for the gold medal. In the heats on Friday last, Thompson ensured he got an early lead before cruised past the finish line. But yesterday the triple Olympic silver medallist had a point to prove, getting out of the blocks first for the lead and sprinting past the finish line to show his readiness for the coming Commonwealth Games.

He was followed in second position by Keston Bledman in a time of 10:00 flat while Darrel Brown underline his intentions to be among the country’s top sprinters once again, by securing third and the resulting bronze medal in 10:05 seconds.

Fourth in the race was Marc Burns in 10.21 and Rondel Sorrillo was fifth 10.26.

Among the Women- Michelle Lee Ahye did not disappoint in the 100 metre dash final crossing the finish line in 10.88 seconds. Kai Selvon snatched the silver medal by finishing second in 11.32 seconds while Rayare Thomas completed the top three with a time of 11.37 seconds.

Meanwhile Jamaal James won the two-lap 800 metres event in a time of one minute, 51.95 seconds fir his club Rebirth with Mark London taking second in 1:52.42 and Clifton Sylvester in third in 1:52.84 seconds.

Meanwhile Kyron Blaise took the long jump title with a distance of 7.28 metres. He got the better of Seon Michael Stafford in second in 6.98 metres.
