Simpson, ‘VCB’ to compete in Jamaica national trials

Trinidad Express :: 24.06.2014

Top sprinters Sherone Simpson and Veronica Campbell-Brown are expected to be under close scrutiny when they compete in the Jamaica national trials this weekend.

The two former champions have both been out of competition for a while due to suspension and will compete in the 100 metres at the national stadium.

It will be her first race of the season for Simpson who could be a bit rusty after not competing for nearly a year.

Campbell-Brown is the country’s top athlete in the 100 metres this year following her 10.86 seconds in Florida in early June, just inside the legal wind limit of 2.0 metres per second.

That time also places her as number two in the world, just behind Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye, who clocked 10.88 seconds over the past weekend at her country’s National Championships. Campbell-Brown, the two-time Olympic sprint champion, pulled out of the recent Diamond League meeting in New York because of injury and has not recovered.

The athletes are seeking selection to represent Jamaica at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The top-three finish will guarantee the runners a spot for the event in Glasgow.
