Mayers clocks 50.04 in Jamaica

Emanuel Mayers clocked 50.04 seconds to finish second in heat one in the qualifying round of the men’s 400 metres hurdles, at the Jamaica National Championships, in Kingston, last Thursday. Roxroy Cato topped the field in 49.99.

Mayers was third fastest overall. However, as a Trinidad and Tobago athlete, he could not compete in the final. Cato struck gold in the championship race in 48.48 seconds.

Two Sundays ago, at the NGC/Sagicor National Open Track & Field Championships, Mayers clocked a personal best 49.57 seconds to capture the T&T title, ahead of world champion Jehue Gordon (49.69).

Another T&T athlete, Emmanuel Callender competed in the men’s 100m and 200m events at the Jamaica National Championships. Running into a strong 4.1 metres per second headwind, Callender won heat one in the 100m preliminary round in 10.73 seconds. And in the opening round of the 200m, he was fourth in heat one in 21.22.

Meanwhile, Dwaine Herbert accumulated 4,945 points to win the T&T Combined Events Championship men’s decathlon, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, on the weekend. Kechell Douglas emerged victorious in the women’s heptathlon with 3,838 points.

Tauren George was the winner of the boys’ under-20 decathlon, earning a total of 4,815 points. Dillon Pierre’s 3,432 points was good enough for gold in the boys’ under-18 octathlon.

The girls’ under-18 heptathlon title went to Rickila Isaac (2,966). Aaron Caesar (4,895) won the boys’ under-16 heptathlon event. And Iyana Doyle (3,099) captured the girls’ under-16 heptathlon crown.
