Williams opens quest for CAC gold today

Tobago’s Kenejah Williams will open T&T’s quest for precious metal, when he challenges the boys’ Under-20 shot put finals on the first session of the three-day Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships, in Morelia, Mexico, this morning.

He is among a contingent of 40 T&T athletes, who left for Mexico via Panama, on Wednesday, hoping to claim similar success to the 2012 edition where this country claimed eight gold, six silver and nine bronze medals.

Akidah Briggs and Asha James will also be aiming for gold in the girls’ U-18 javelin finals. Briggs will have a busy day as she is scheduled to return to action in the girls’ U-18 shot-put finals along with Chelsea James. Briggs was third in the girls’ U-18 shot put at the Carifta Games behind Chelsea who won the gold.

Tyriq Horsford and his Zenith club-mate Vandel Joseph are among the starters in the boys U-18 javelin finals.

T&T’s first gold on the track could come in the boys U-18 800m finals where Point Fortin New Jets’ Terry Frederick and Myles Jackson of Memphis Pioneers will compete. UK-based Nicholas Landeau will be among the main contenders to to take the boys U-20 800m following his 1:49.51 clocking in Belgium in May. Landeau will be joined by Ashton Gill in the race. Girls U-18 Heptathlon competitors Ayana Glasgow (Toco TAFAC), Khemani Roberts (Zenith) and Anya Akili (Zenith) will begin their quest for gold. The trio will contest the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m on the first day and then the long jump, javelin and 800m on the second day (tomorrow) hoping to amass the top points en route to the podium. Hurdler Dwight St Hillaire (Zenith) will do battle in the semifinals of the boys’ U-18 400m hurdles events and look for a spot in the finals to be contested later today.

Reubin Walters (Memphis Pioneers) and Aaron Lewis (Zenith) will line in the boys’ U-20 400m hurdles semifinals this morning, before their potential final scheduled early this afternoon. Among the overall favourites, Jonathan Farinha of Abilene Wildcats will lead the way in the 100m for T&T. The national junior double sprint champion will contest the boys’ U-20 100m semifinals along with John Mark Constantine (Concorde). The 2014 Carifta bronze medalist and Constantine will be looking for place in the afternoon finals.

Zakiya Denoon (Zenith) and Aaliyah Telesford (Pt Fortin New Jets) are this country’s entrants in the girls’ U-20 event and are also among the favourites to win gold. among the favorites for the gold. Akanni Hislop (Zenith) and Corey Stewart (Abilene Wildcats) will contest the today’s boys’ U-18 100m semifinals and finals, carded for the morning and afternoon, respectively, while Jenea Spinks (Neon Trackers), this country’s lone sprinter, will challenge the Girls U-18 100m semifinal this morning.

Today’s action will end with the girls’ U-18 and U-20 4x100m relay finals, where T&T will be looking to improve on the silver won in the girls under 20 race at the Carifta Games.
