Farinha, Telesford golden at CAC Juniors

Jonathan Farinha was golden for Trinidad and Tobago on the opening day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track & Field Championships, in Morelia, Mexico, yesterday.

The 18-year-old sprinter stopped the clock at 10.38 seconds to take top spot in the boys’ under-20 100 metres final.

Jamaican Edward Clarke picked up silver in 10.48, while Bermuda’s Kyle Webb bagged bronze in 10.55.

The other T&T sprinter in the boys’ under-20 century, John Mark Constantine clocked 10.54 seconds to win his qualifying heat, but could not repeat that run in the final, and had to settle for fifth spot in 10.64.

Aaliyah Telesford led a one-two finish for T&T in the girls’ under-20 100m final. Telesford earned gold in 11.47 seconds, while her teammate Zakiya Denoon produced an 11.55 run to pick up silver, finishing just ahead of Bahamian Kelanna Albury, the bronze medallist in 11.56.

Denoon and Telesford teamed up with Kayelle Clarke and Akila McShine for gold in the girls’ under-20 4x100m relay in 44.24 seconds—a new Championship record. Jamaica were forced to settle for silver in 44.33, while bronze went to Bahamas in 45.73.

There was also gold for T&T in the girls’ under-20 shot put, Portious Warren dominating her rivals with a 14.47 metres throw. Jess St John was a distant second in the event, the Antigua and Barbuda athlete producing a 13.29m effort to earn silver. Mexico’s Ana Karen Guerrero threw 13.07m to take bronze.

In the girls’ under-18 shot put, T&T’s Chelsea James bagged bronze with a 16.00m throw. Gold and silver went to host nation Mexico. Fernanda Orozco grabbed gold with a big 17.64m effort, a new Championship record, while Naomi Mojica threw 16.72m to seize silver. All three medallists bettered the previous meet record of 15.04m—established by Jamaican Gleneve Grange two years ago.
